So I'm 32, and for the most part completely stopped listening to music about 10 or 12 years ago. Why? Lots of reasons, I guess, including starting grad school and having little free time, getting tired of the stuff I had, having a crappy stereo that nothing sounded good on...

Anyway, I had an epiphany a while back that I really liked music and missed it and wanted it back in my life. My first purchase with my poker earnings (I only started playing last spring) was a nice Onkyo stereo, and now I want to start buying more music. I'd also like to expand my tastes a bit.

The problem is, having been away from things for so long, I have very little idea what's out there. So help me out, guys.

Some things I used to love that I feel I've outgrown now: REM, the Cure, the Smiths...

What I used to love that I still love: U2, most classical music (I don't need help with the Classical, though)

One group I just discovered that I love now: Les Nubians

When I listen to the radio I find I have eclectic tastes. I like rock, most jazz, folk, some R&B. I'm definitely not into metal or rap, or the pop most teenagers seem to listen to.

I'd be grateful for some interesting recomendations, and like I said I don't mind pushing my boundaries (Les Nubians was a completely new direction for me...I listened to a few tracks at a local record store and fell in love with it).

Thanks!

Coheed & Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News
The Von Bondies - Pawn Shoppe Heart
Auf der Maur - Auf der Maur
Muse - Absolution
The Killers - Hot Fuss
Audioslave - Audioslave
Zwan - Mary Star of the Sea

Make sure you're up to date on your Radiohead. If you really quit listening in 93-95, then I highly suggest you pick up at least Ok Computer and The Bends and maybe Kid A or Hail To The Thief. Also pick up a couple Smashing Pumpkins while you're at it too.

Dude, all good except that AudioSlave album sucks.

Me and my friends know the Coheed dudes...good to see them on your list. Second Stage Turbine Blade needs to be purchased in unison.

I realized after the first response (I haven't even heard of any of those groups... /images/graemlins/tongue.gif) that I have a second question, which is if there's a good web site where I can listen to sample tracks...

download iTunes, but don't buy anything. they'll give you 30 second previews of nearly every single song for each artist.

...And you will know us by the trail of the dead (aka Trail of Dead)

try www.allofmp3.com (http://www.allofmp3.com) and you can get the entire songs.

it starts out in russian and you must change to english veresion. songs are about five cents to download.

www.listen.com (http://www.listen.com) $10/month, legal (as opposed to allofmp3), all you can eat streaming

By the sounds of your past interests, I'd suggest http://pitchforkmedia.com. They're a great source for cutting edge new stuff without buying into the MTV2 generation.

One of my current favs is The Arcade Fire - Funeral [Merge Records] - which was #1 of their top 50 albums of 2004.

Yummy.

If you have DirecTv, the Alternative Music Channel (817) also isn't bad for some stuff you probably haven't heard and it tells you the name of the band, song, and album. There is a bit of lame stuff on there like Blink 182 and the new U2 or Morrisey shiz, but overall, it's a great station. It'll reach back for some older Pumpkins, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, STP, Fugazzi, PJ Harvey, Hum, Bjork, as well as the newer stuff like Modest Mouse (I know they've been around but they play the newer stuff), Killers, Shins, Golden Republic, Kasabian, new A Perfect Circle, Travis, Interpol, etc.

I forgot to mention I'm a fan of the new Interpol album (Antics) as well.

listening to the lastest wilco album was incredibly boring. i didn't think that that much of yankee foxtrot hotel or whatefver it's called. i would definitly recommend, summerteeth, being there, and a.m.

also their collaboration albums with billy bragg putting music to woody guthrie lyrics, mermaid ave. 1 and 2 were excellent.

BOOOOOOOOOOOO. YHF is one of the best albums I have ever heard. And Ghost is Born needs to be listened to a lot before you completely come to grips with its awesomeness.

I'm also not a huge fan of pre-summer teeth stuff so to each his own.

But you should definitely see "I am Trying to break Your Heart", you may start to listen to YHF differently.

i did see i am trying to break your heart.

i do like YHF, not just as much as the older albums. there are some really good songs on the albu, but there are some songs n that album that annoy me so much, it makes the album as a whole, not that good to me.

i'll have to listen to the new one again, but it just screamed ho hum to me.

Seeing them live really opened up that album for me.

Good list by the way. I can't believe I forgot Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret. And a few Dismemberment Plan albums. (Interpol too..but thats been covered)

hmm, this is weird. i've seen wilco a couple times, and both times i was bored out of my mind. we actually left early the 2nd time.

both a few years ago, so maybe they've gotten more energy in their shows.

Pitchfork's solid (and based out of Chicago, not Brooklyn as some people assume.)

The Arcade Fire album is great, but I'm having a hard time getting into their #2 pick, Animal Collective's "Sung Tongs." Anyone know the deal with it?
