I am planning a trip but have not made hotel reservations yet. I am considering this one because of the price. Am I asking for trouble? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

It's great if you're looking for the worst hotel in Las Vegas. Or if you're looking for crack whores.

Don't stay there. Cough up $20 more a night and stay on the Strip at the Imperial Palace.

EDIT: And if you insist on staying downtown, El Cortez is a terrible choice. Do the Lady Luck or Fitzgerald's or something.. Binion's... whatever, but not the El Cortez.

I stay at the El Cortex regularly. It meets all my requirements. The rooms are clean, the bed has clean sheets, and the shower has hot water. The price is right. And the Kitty Cafe has a breakfast special for $1.99

Depends on what you are looking for. If you what something other than a bed and hot shower, then go somewhere else.

The Western Hotel and Casino down the street has a much better selection of crack hoes. You might try the Ambassador Hotel and Liquor Store across the street, if you would like a transvestite crack hoe. No trip is really complete without a stop at Atomic Liquors, next door to the Western.

A guy at my table last week said he used to deal at the Western. Came to work one day at 10AM and heard that some guy who had won 1k at the slots was stabbed around 8AM as he walked outside.

He quit after his shift...

In the old days when I went to Vegas I would get a cheap air only ticket and slum it in the dead zone (Fremont between Western and Showboat/Castaways). I'd wake up each morning at 5AM to the sounds of drug dealer, pimps 'n hos hustling. But I was young, single and poor.

Being older, hitched and not poor I cannot stay anywhere but NICE.

Good luck to you guys slumming.

"the Kitty Cafe has a breakfast special for $1.99"

...... with real kittys ?

Seriously tho, the El Cortez is the second oldest hotel in Las Vegas. It is worth a visit if you want REALLY old Vegas. You should not go there however if you are unused to the "urban experience" because it is surrounded by a less than desireable population of street criminals.

(It is okay to visit if you have some street sense but you should be aware of potential/likely trouble if you look like you have $10 in your pocket and walk out and down on Fremont Street. I cannot recommend staying there to save $10.)

Slot machines are very liberal, food is inexpensive and decent. Lots of action. Casino (old section) looks & smells like the same carpet since I first went there in 1976.

I wouldn't reccommend walking in that area at night unless you had three other guys with you. Other than that +, it's okay. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

My wife and I go to Vegas twice a year. We split our stays in Downtown, (Main Street Station)on the Srtip at Harrahs. You want pretty good inexpexpensive rooms, try "Fitzgeralds, Vegas Club, or Lady Luck"

The Gold Spike is both cheaper and nicer than the El Cortez. Perfectly clean, large rooms. Just don't stay too long in the casino without some kind of SCUBA apparatus.

Also, the El Cortez has done some pretty nasty things to law-abiding customers it suspected of playing with an advantage. Vote with your wallet.

There are so many places you can stay downtown or on the strip for under $100 per night. Check expedia.com or one of the other discount booking sites. The El Cortez is a rat hole. As soon as you get there you're going to regret it. You should, however definitely visit it if you want to see what degenerate gamblers and washed up hookers look like.

OK, here's my one and only El Cortez experience. The last time I went to Vegas was in October for a friend's bachelor party and wedding. The night of the Bachelor Party we rented some Party Bus thing...visited several strip joints, got extremely tanked and ended up at El Cortez at about 3:30 in the morning. There were like 8 or 9 or us. We played at the dollar craps table for about three hours...we were completely smashed, spilt beer on the felt on the table, not once but twice...a buddy of ours was sitting on a stool by the table just watching, he fell off the thing, passed out. The pit boss told us we needed to take care of our buddy, but he wanted to "take care of us for our action." Right, this is after we were terribly obnoxious, spilt beer on the felt, etc. So, he told us to take our buddy into the coffee shop and he'd comp us all specials...So, we did, we got specials all around. While eating dinner, one of my buddies ends up chatting up this waitress. Quite honestly she was fairly attractive, not Mandalay Bay cocktail waitress attractive, but trailer trash attractive, but she was attractive. Anywho, she tells him that she gets off in like an hour and 1/2 and if he could hang out, he could go get a room and she'd get him a discount (The room was like ($29). Well, he goes and gets the room and tells her it's all taken care of and she tells him there is one problem...she can't get ahold of her husband to make sure he'll watch the kids a little longer. He says f it and takes off (minus his thirty bucks). The rest of us were still there for all of this b/c we had called a cab that never showed up. Finally, we said screw it and walked over to the Golden Nugget to snag a cab. The walk went OK, except we ran into some lady who asked us if we had any crack. We told her we didn't and ran to the Nugget.

Got a cab and worked our way back to the Imperial Palace.

This is all completely 100% true, dude there ain't no way in hell I'd ever stay at El Cortez. If you want cheap try Imperial Palace or Sahara or downtown you could go with a variety of places, California, the Plaza, anything but EC.
