Given my extremely limited selection (I have no experience in this field):

--Rick Allen (Def Leppard...for gosh sake, he has only one arm)
--Live's drummer (just sounds so gosh darn good)

I never listened to Zappa, but a friend of mine lent me a Terry Bozzio video - guy's pretty amazing.

I never listened to the Dixie Dregs, but I caught the Steve Morse Band opening for Rush in 1986, and I got to see/hear Rod Morgenstein play live...very cool.

Yes.

Everyone likes to rip on blink-182, but seeing this guy tear up the drums in a live set is pretty awesome. He also does it while spinning 360 degrees in a cage.

Also, listen to the opening drum fill of "First Date." Probably the best drum open to any pop song of the decade.

TimS got it right...Stewart Copeland was one of the greatest drummers on the planet period..(drummer for the Police, for you new un's ...) - watch the live performances and see what I mean.....[censored] all over and in time and incredible....

I'm no student of music and my answers are certainly colored by the type of music that I listen to, but I've always thought that Matt Cameron (formerly of Soundgarden, now of Pearl Jam) was one of the best in the business.

Actually it's very close. I did forget Carey when making this list, but he's not in my top favorites, and Portnoy is definitely beyond him.

wow dude...half of my cd collection is punk/metal and most of those have things that are much faster than anything i've heard travis do. pick up one death metal or hardcore band's cd and you'll poopie yourself if you think travis is fast. granted the man has great technical talent, but i can't say i think he's that fast compared to a lot of drummers i've seen/heard. not a personal knock or anything, i guess i just listen to fast music.

i see your travis barker and raise you a 12-year old Tony Royster Jr.
http://kr.blog.yahoo.com/lsm82912000/1238379.html?p=1&t=3

prepare to poopie yourself. (yeah yahoo korea, couldn't find it anywhere else)

for sheer speed and cool solos you can check out some metal. dragonforce...it's gay but i love it:

for the record my favorite drummer is Jordan Burns from Strung Out.

I can't believe I forgot to mention Paul Johnson. He's the drummer for an amazing band that most of you have probably never even heard of. He puts out some great beats and is a very good drummer. If you're at all in to emo give them a listen.

it's also a way that non-fans say they suck.

although i think they're all fantastic musicians, there's something about mixing them all together that just doesn't work for me. ok so i don't really think they suck. just not that good. i'm totally amazed at les claypool's abilities but it's just too much.

my philosophies is less is more. with music, design, and sadly enough my penis size.

some of my favorites are

the drummer from:
tool
sunny day real estate
part time drummer for the vandals, who i believe drums for a number of other bands and musicians.

excuse my lack of names, as i dont' remember names of musicians, songs, or albums... rarely. and i'm much too lazy to actually look them up.
