One way to define a manly movie is if men watch it but women won't. The one popular movie that I can think of right away that all guys like but most girls hate is Swingers. Also, Party Animal is a great, yet quite unknown movie which no girl will watch all the way through.

If you're talking about a so-called "guy" movie where, you start talking about it with one of your buddies, and the wife/gf rolls her eyes and leaves the room, I submit (in no particular order and cutting across several genres and time periods):

- The Hunt For Red October
- The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
- Enter The Dragon
- The Longest Yard (the original)
- The Wild Bunch
- Predator
- Dirty Harry
- Happy Gilmore
- The Big Lebowski
- New Wave Hookers /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Any movie including male-rape cannot be considered manly. Both Pulp Fiction and Deliverance would be eliminated. Not a joke, but I suspect we are on the same page.

Fight Club is real, REAL manly. Of course, there's the gratuitous and sometimes disturbing violence which is a big turn-off for the females. Most women, even those that are into action or horror films find the violence way too personal and excessive to handle. Also, there's only one signifcant female character in the movie. It also reinforces manly things, like causing trouble and drinking beer /images/graemlins/grin.gif Yeah, my vote goes to Fight Club.

Ok, for everyone who is saying Fight Club, it can't be on the list if one of the metrics of a good guys movie is that chicks don't watch it. For that matter, any movie with Brad Pitt can't be on the list, period.

Secondly, Fight Club is really just about a group of repressed gay men (or at the very least contains *tons* of overtones to that effect) but I'm sure you guys all know this already anyway. Thus, it doesn't make a very good 'manly man' movie, unless such a manly man is a repressed homsexual (which is probably not too uncommon for overly manly men).

Clint Eastwood's movies seem like solid picks as the characters he plays are the quintessential 'manly men' according to American ideals.

Or any movie starring Jenna Jameson, /images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

Bull Durham, like Jerry Maguire, is a chick movie disguised as a guy movie (although I personally found Bull Durham to be eminently more watchable).

Good call on Unforgiven. That movie either spent $0 on makeup or it had a huge makeup budget to make it look like no one was wearing any. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

And I'm not sure what there is not to get. My point is that the movie has very strong overtones that it's really about a group of repressed, gay men (rather than just a group of repressed, non-gay men).

One of mine as well....but it doesn't count because lots of chicks like this movie. Johnny Depp, duh? Goodfellas is shown on lifetime because it fits into the "women in abusive relationships" theme. If you pay attention you'll notice that half the movie is narrated by the Main charachter's wife. And half the movie deals with their relationship issues.I agree that Fight Club could not be more blatantly homoerotic.

Maybe a movie like Bloodsport could make the list? I like Mad Max as well but maybe the Mel Gibson factor eliminates that one as well. Terminator is a good pick. I can't see too many women liking that one. Braveheart? Gladiator? Saving Private Ryan? American Psycho?

No... I know what numer one is now. It's Scarface and it's not even close. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yeah - it's very 80's. The IMDB description/review makes it sound uber-gay, but it's really nowhere near as retarded as the idiot on IMDB makes it sound. Well, to be fair, it's not a "good" movie, but it's not bad in the way the guy on IMDB makes it sound like it would be. It's not a popular movie by any means, though. I've never seen it in any store or rental place - I've only seen it in a college friend's movie collection. There are a few copies on E-bay (http://search.ebay.com/the-party-animal_DVDs-Movies_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8QQsacatZ11232), though. Note that the one with the picture of the box just copied the same gayrod description that IMDB has.
