Rubik's Cube

Many years ago I bought one of those books that taught you how to solve Rubik’s Cube. I got to where I could solve it in about 45 seconds, which was kinda’ cool.

Anyway, I remember the author stating that he used mathematics in order to develop his system. My question for you math wizards is how would you go about doing this mathematically?
