I watched the first of the two eps that were on tonight, which makes 4 total that I've seen. I don't get why people like this show. I didn't laugh once.

If you like it, please explain why.

there are a few episodes that are just "meh".

I really like it. I think it's funny. Were there new episodes tonite? I saw that is back on FOX, but not sure if they're just replaying old episodes or what?

I don't know and don't care if those were new or old ones tonight. I'm asking people who like this show in general, to explain why.

they are showing a couple of reruns for a few weeks before the new shows begin.

I can't really explain it, but if you don't like it you don't like it... I think it's hilarious.

I believe they start in Feb or March, I would imagine someone would have started a thread if the new season started tonight.

Because its funny... and you obviously have a sense in humor that is not harmonious with the rest of the general population. Not trying to be rude. But, it's true. Nearly, everyone finds the show funny. Even with something as subjective as humor, you are wrong.

You're missing the point. Assuming I'm a complete tard with no sense of humor who lives in a cave, describe something from tonights show, or any other episode, that you thought was funny.

Some reasons why you might not like it:

It is very subtle. I'm sure you are intelligent enough to pick up on lots of the jokes... but did not enjoy the slow/different way the joke was introduced.

Tons of jokes are nothing more than a character being themself. If you don't find Peter's or Stuey's characters funny just talking, then a lot of the show will just feel like fluff to you. This has to be the #1 reason Family Guy's humor does elude many people.

ThaSaltCracka

to add on what he said, a lot of the jokes come out of nowhere too, and as quick as they appear they disappear, so they are easy to miss. Also, there is zero plot, each episode is just random BS wrapped into a "plot". Its like a cartoon version of Seinfeld, filled with racist jokes.

Take TSC and pshreck and you've got it all. Its one of those shows that you can't explain, but don't really have to. Brian, Peter, and Stewey are funny just whenever they do something pretty much.

I don't remember the order of the episodes tonight - they were reruns, new ones are in March - but the one where they taped the Griffins for 6 months was pretty funny all the way through I thought. Just might be one of those shows that isn't for everybody, but wow...not one laugh?

I loved Seinfeld, Family Guy is nothing like Seinfeld.

To me, Family Guy has very predictable and cliched characters. I don't see how them just talking would be funny.

Then there's the lameass one liners making fun of celebrities that no one cares about. Those make me want to vomit.

The "random scenes" they do can be some of the funniest stuff you'll ever see. Here's one thing that was funny tonight, for starters. When Joe falls off the sled with his son and gets up and starts to walk, and then his son cripples him again. Family Guy's blatant disregard for politcally correctness is very on point and very funny.

Seinfeld's characters are incredibly predictable. That is why the shows are similar... throw random every day situations into a handful of characters that are hilarious/ridiculous, and you have a great show. Doesn't matter if the characters aren't even remotely dynamic.

I love both and I think I like them both for similar reasons.

Seinfeld also had predictable characters. It was the situations they got into, and their responses to them, that made it funny.

I'd have to disagree. Think about some of the episodes. I literally think the writers just go "how absurd is the social taboo of picking your nose? Lets go with it!". From there, the show 'writes itself' being that the characters are incapable of dealing with any small situation in a normal manner.

I'm not claiming there was no writing... Im claiming all the writing essentially was character responses, and that the situations themselves only seemed funny because of the characters.

I would say the exact same thing goes for Family Guy. If you don't find the Fam Guy characters funny, then the situations certainly aren't gonna do it for ya.

Read his first post, it's asking why we think it's funny.

And it is a big deal.

Subtle humour, randomness, mixed in with some moments that are just [censored] hilarious.

Everyone finds humor in different places. That's why you may think some movies that got horrible reviews were hilarious, and vice versa. I think the show is funny as hell personally, and like all sitcoms, some eps indeed fall short but overall the show's jokes are quick, subtle, and come up big more often than not...

tolbiny

Since may first is a sunday i can only assume they will keep it there. There are so many holes in Fox's (and ABC's, cbs' and nbc's) programming schedules that it could go anywhere. But i assume they will stick it on sundays, especially with persistant rumors that next year will be the last for the Simpsons.

In order to think it’s funny you have to have a sick sense of humor.

"Look at me, I'm a Christian."

I think it’s hilarious!

Comedies are like different types of porn; it either does it for you or it doesn't. it's not any kind of statement on you if you didn't think one show was funny or if someone else did...just, not your cup of tea is all. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
