Can someone please explain to me what a blocking bet is and the concept behind it? I see this term being used a lot on these boards but I don't know what it means. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums, jeggyman.
A blocking bet is a term used for a river play when you're first to act. It's also known as a "defensive" bet when you have a decent, but not a powerful hand. The theme of a blocking bet is that standard opponents will not go over the top of these bets without a powerhouse.
It's designed to prevent a player with late position to bluff big at the pot on the river causing a difficult decision for hero when it occurs.
Basically you're betting as much as you're willing to call rather than giving a later position player the initative.
