when the 2nd ace hit, i liked my chances and figured an underpair was out that kind of got counterfeited....

Depending on the players, you could fire a shot at both the flop and the turn, or simply fire a "I'm not stealing" bet on the turn.

I think you have to bet the turn here...anyone who has an ace or an eight would have probably bet the flop

you wouldn't consider that someone would slowplay an eight hoping someone would come out firing with just the ace? and a pair over 8 still takes me down....

It's a possibility. I think it really depends on what type of players are involved in the hand. Since you didn't mention if you had any reads on anyone, I can't tell you for sure what I would do.
