Wanted to get this one started. Good luck to both teams, and let's hope it's a great game.

(And of course, Go JETS!)

Go Steelers!

So, what is the condition of Pennington. Did they make up that flu thing to make him seem worse than he actually is or is he really not doing so well?

Also, high scoring game or low scoring game?

BottlesOf
01-15-2005, 04:09 PM
He had a 24 hr. flu thing. I don't know him personally, so I have no idea if it was made up, but I don't think the moon landing was made up either, so color me naive.

I think there will be low/medium scoring.

Let's see what Big Ben is made of.

The drinking has began...

and I only didn't go to the game because it was supposed to be a crappy day when I could have bought tickets on Monday.

It's a pretty nice day here in Pittsburgh. Sun is shining, looks like clear weather and in the high twenties. The sun is warming things up though so it feels nicer than that.

Field is going to be crap though. Grass was frozen last night and now it's melted and muddy. Good luck to the Jets, but not too much /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't think the Jets are the type of team where we will find out what Ben is made of. What I mean by that is, like the Steelers, they are a grind it out kind of team that also relys of defense. I don't think the Jets can get a big lead and force the Steelers to rely on Ben for a comeback. It should be a low scoring, hard hitting, grind it out kind of game. All Ben has to do is hand it off and not make mistakes.

However, if the Jets can find a way to slow the Steeler running game down, Ben would then be forced into a lot of 3rd and long situations. That could test him a bit.

I noticed he often holds the ball to long. Im my opinion he hasn't learned to throw it away as often as he should which has resulted in too many sacks this year. It seems when they get just inside field goal range, he often ends up getting sacked and then the Steelers pin the other team inside their own 5 with a short punt.

Also, it looks like Abraham played in the last matchup but he only had one tackle. I wonder how that affects things.

Thoughts?

I lived in Pittsburgh for all four SB victories. I was there in 75 and 76. Then I moved to Spain for two years 77 and 78, and they didn't win it. Then I moved back to Pitt during 79 and 80, and they won those years, then I moved away, and they haven't won since. Obviously, I need to move back.

Note to OP: who pulls for the Jets? I mean, honestly.

I don't know if it's the Jets filling us with BS, but the belief around here is that LaMont is going to get as many if not more carries than Martin. Personally I don't get it... but I never understand anything Herman does.

BottlesOf
01-15-2005, 04:43 PM
No way. Lamont will definitely get some carries, as he should. I've heard they will both be on the field at the same time for some plays, I think that should be interesting.

But Lamont is awesome. His avg. is like over 5 yards a carry. He basically won it for us last week, by setting up a short field goal in OT. Lamont Jordan is the new Bus. /images/graemlins/blush.gif

I still don't see how you don't ride a HOFer and the leagues leading rusher in the playoffs and try to split carriers with the backup. Can you name Barry Sanders backup? (don't bother answering that)

Jordan's coming on, but yeah, the Jets need Martin.

BTW, Steelers -9. Anyone else think that's skewed?

BottlesOf
01-15-2005, 04:52 PM
They definitely will use plenty of Curtis. But your point about Sanders doens't make sense. I can't name his backup, and I'm assuming he's a nobody. Well, the Jets' situation is very different. Jordan isn't a nobody. He's a skilled runner, with a very different style than Martin. By using some Jordan, they force the Pitt defense to constantly adjust their technique in stopping the run as they will have two different runners running at them at different times, and occasionally not know who will have the ball until it's handed off.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

My point is, who knows and who cares about Barry Sanders backup. Barry Sanders was a HOF running back and always at the top of the league in rushing every year. When you have that kind of talent, you don't need a backup. You ride that horse to the death. Is LaMont a HOFer? No... Has LaMont Jordan ever won a rushing title? No... has LaMont ever rushed for more than 500 yards in a season? No...

I'm not saying he's not a good change of pace back for the Jets. To consider giving him as many and maybe more carries than Martin though is just insane to me.

Also, I wouldn't be too happy if I were you with having them both in the backfield. Not having a real fullback really hurts a running back (see Eddie George in Tennessee when they stopped using a FB). Running backs are used to cut blocking people, they're not used to trying to stand up linebackers.

[/ QUOTE ]

I know Jets fans aren't going to like me saying this, but I don't think so at all. I also think the Steelers are easily going to cover that. Don't worry... I'll be here to eat my words if it comes to that but that's just how I feel about this game.

The only chance I think the Jets have is to get some big plays early and put a quick 10-14 points on the board. That could take Pittsburgh away from the running game putting more pressure on Ben and the defense.

No longer "undefeated in all NFL starts".

It will be "he played like a crappy rookie in his first really important football game of his NFL career".

Dont get me wrong, he is good. As for really blowing me away, he would need atleast 1 playoff win this season, or atleast a good game when it matters.

Steelers commit 3 second-half turnovers, one of them for a touchdown the other way, and another one to give the game to the Jets (if they convert). Steelers give up a punt return for a TD.

Jets blow two chances to win the game with two missed field goals.

Steelers survive, but they can't play like this against NE or IND.

Steelers show why they're good though. In the second half, Bettis and Staley inside the tackles just run over the Jets defense, and the Jets needed every one of those turnovers. The top-ranked defense in the league gives up but 3 points.

I am satisfied

How can you be satisfied after a game like that? Don't me wrong; I agree the Jets should be proud of what they accomplished, and so should their fans. But it's been, what, ten minutes since your season ended in fairly heartbreaking fashion?

Take some time to be pissed off. Satisfaction will be there in the morning.

Well, it was far from what I expected. Jets played decent (minus your FG kicker) and took full advantage of the Steelers mistakes (minus the last interception).

I feel bad for your kicker. Heinz Field chews up and spits out kickers. I believe opponent FG% made is > 50%. He's going to take some serious abuse in the media.

If the Steelers want to move on though, they need a good kick in the ass. Cowher's usually given the team off until Wednesday since they've been winning. I bet he has their asses in on Monday.

They looked very rusty and Ben played like he is... a rookie. Obviously his ribs are a lot worse than the Steelers are leading on.

Nice season Jets... and since I'm a HUGE Curtis Martin fan, I hate to see the season to end.

I was one of the few who thought the Jets would win, and I'll be damned. If they had a kicker who was worth a damn tonight, I'd be grinning ear to ear.

Oh well, WGAF. I'm in Atlanta. We watch the Falcons.

Do you Jets fans find yourself trying to do different things since they missed the last 2 FG's? Like sit in a different part of the couch or something like that?

I know I have to piss, but since I had to piss, Jets have choked twice. I feel like if I piss the Steelers luck will end.

P.S. - And now, I can go take a piss...

Bust those [censored] Pats.

Wow. You're even more confident about tomorrow's outcome than I am. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Too bad. For a few hours today, everybody in NE and Indianapolis were cheering for the Jets.

Now the Colts fans have seen first hand what we in NE saw in the ALCS. NY is Choketown!!!
