I concur with bholdr, sneakers are complete cheese in this situation. Sneakers are for athletic purposes, end of discussion. I will sometimes wear sneakers with jeans but only if I know I am going to be on my feet for a long time , e.g., acting as Mrs. VulturesRow's sherpa while she tours the mall. Thats about the only exception.
