View Full Version : Is VPIP reliable for NL?

I was wondering if VPIP on a player in a NL game can be misleading. Take me for example, I consider myself a fairly tight-aggressive player (I usually open only with strong cards, especially from early position). However, at a passive table, which many SSNL tables are, I will limp with a lot of hands (any suited connectors, suited one or two gappers, Ax or Kx suited, QJo, JTo etc.). I will even do this from early position if the table is passive pre-flop. Therefore, my VPIP is somewhere around 40% and anyone who uses that to put me on a hand is going to be off base. Now, if they actually pay attention to when I raise versus limp, they can much more easily put me on a hand. But I don't give the people at SSNL Party tables that much credit. I wonder how many of my opponents are similar to me and whether I am being misled by looking at people's VPIP to help define hand range. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Not entirely so. You can be loose pre-flop and play relatively tight post-flop.
