I'd like to build an MP3 playlist to run during games. What are your suggestions for poker/gambling related songs for the list? As the list gets going I'll update this thread with what we have so far.

This is probably not known by many, (if any), but here's my first submission, which happens to be a favorite song of mine:

As I don't normally (ever) post here, whatsup. I think that party favorites, on a digital cable music channel, work well, especially if there are other people not into the game there. Good old school hip hop and popular reggae, very depending on the crowd, are good for the right mood. I like rock and way out alternative, some trance myself, but a lot of that isn't any good for background. That, and here are some good ones...

Take the Money and Run- Steve Miller Band
Mack the Knive- Frank Sinatra
I Ain't Goin' Out Like That- Cypress Hill
Ace of Spades- Motorhead
Kings and Queens- Aerosmith
Beat It- Michael Jackson (for joke value)
Take Five- Dave Brubeck Quartet

Phil Harris' "Darktown Poker Club" is a must.

Don't forget AC/DC's "The Jack," which is so full of poker/sex double-entrendres that it should be canonized.

Great job everyone! This is really cool... great variety of music for the great variety of people playing in poker games! I snagged a bunch off the net too, from blogs and such, which I will add later.

There are a lot of songs here I don't know, so if anyone sees one that should not be on here, let me know.

I'll update weekly (or so) listing of the songs.

Helluva list there, TenPercenter. In my experience, 132 songs is a pretty good number for a 6-7 hour game mix.

It's late, and I don't have the energy to go through all of your list right now. I completely forgot about "Gallo del Cielo". It's about cock fighting, not poker, but it is about gambling, and it's a great song.

St. John the Gambler is a good song, too, but it might not be appropriate for poker night. The tempo is slow, and the song is a bit of a downer:
But the road was long beneath her feet. She followed her frozen breath,
In search of a certain St. John the Gambler, stumbling to her death.

--

I did recall a few more that should be on the list:

Corb Lund Band - "Time to Switch to Whiskey"
I've been splittin' eights and hittin' straights in the card rooms of this world.

Corb Lund Band - "(Gonna) Shine Up My Boots"
Gonna find me a game of hold 'em if I can.
I'll fold 'em all night long, 'til I got me a hand.

Robert Earl Keen, Jr. - "Sonora's Death Row"
I won some silver at seven-card stud, so I was out-doin' my pals.

I'm surprised Juice Newton's "Queen of Hearts" hasn't come up yet.

There are also a couple that have nothing to do with poker, but they're pretty popular among our micro-limit home game players:
Blue Ridge Playboys - Give Me My Dime Back (we love this one!)
Louvin Brothers - Cash on the Barrel Head

I never did go through all of my MP3s, but I do have many of the songs listed. Unfortunately, I'm on dialup. Besides, such file sharing would be illegal, as would me dropping off a CD the next time I got the nerve to drive down to the big city of Dallas.

I gotta add "When the Chips are Down" by Lloyd Banks...

Love this song, but may not fit in well with all those other songs.

Also-Not Addicted, by The Streets. Not specifically about poker, just a good song about a guy who wants to place a big bet on a soccer game, but can't place the bet in time. then he finds out he would have lost the bet. pretty good song.

Joe Ely did a good cover, but Tom Russell Wrote it.

--

There're a couple other Ray Wylie Hubbard songs that may be of interest: "Rollin' them Bones" (not his best) and his ballad "Dust of the Chase":

I come down from Oklahoma, a pistol in my boot.
A pair of dice, a deck of cards, and a bible in my suit.
I come here as the cause of tears, I am a cryin' shame,
7-stud or eternal blood, just lookin' for a game.

Steve Earle caught a miner cheatin' in a company town card game in "Devil's Right Hand"

Wasn't the protagonist's father dealing stud when found in "A Boy Named Sue"?

I also think the narrator was out playing poker late (and losing) in Ricky Scaggs' "Honey (Won't You Open That Door?)"

Another gambling related song I thought of (though not poker) is "Mr. Siegal" by Tom Waits Well, I dropped thirty grand on the Nugget slots, I had to sell my ass on Fremont Street...

There may be more of Waits' songs that qualify. He often wrote about lowlifes, including gamblers.

More if I think of them.

Obviously, you've never been to an O.A.R. show! And I am not necessarily saying you should like the music - they bring a lot more to the table - you would appreciate them a lot more if you've ever been to a show. Those who have been will know what I mean /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I saw that you added "Lonesome Loser to the list, so then I think a little Social Distortion, "Bad Luck", should be there as well because you can't have a "Lonesome Loser" without a little "Bad Luck".

Also, I might have missed it, but Clint Black's "A Good Run of Bad Luck" is another one for the "Lonesome Loser".

Additionally, I noticed you have both Elvis' and ZZ Top's version of Viva Las Vegas on your list. There is a pretty good version of this song on disc 3 of Bruce Springsteen's Essentials set you may want to consider.

Finally, since the promo's for TILT have brought it back around "Remedy" from the Black Crowes is just a great song even though the only thing that remotely connects it to poker is a show on which the verdict is still out.

If someone creates a playlist out this list to download please let me know where to get it. There are some great tunes on this list.

May have missed it but for tourney's I think Queens "Another one bites the dust" is a must as well as "We are the Champions" for the final table /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not even a Queen fan but was listening to the Big 80's on Sirrius on our road trip yesterday... heard the song thought of the list.

Does anyone know of an easy (and relatively inexpensive) way to collect all of these songs online without being arrested (I know, too many rules!)? I did a little searching and kept hitting a brick wall, but I am not the most surf savvy guy on the planet.

I'd love to have these songs ready to go for my home games!

My first post. +2 on Social Distortion's "Bad Luck". Fantastic song. I'm loading up my new iPod for the game I host next month. We're all classic rockers, so here's a partial list, sorry if I repeat...

Tom Petty "Even the Losers"
Who "Happy Jack"
Warren Zevon "Lawyers, Guns and Money" ("I was gambling in Havana")
Rolling Stones "Tumblin' Dice"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Give It Away"
Randy Newman "It's Money that Matters"
Black Crowes "Remedy" (tilt theme, I believe)
Alan Parsons Project "Nothing left to lose"

We also make sure to start each tournament with the playing of our national anthem...

Great thread!!! I compiled my own list awhile back for my poker nights... I've got a few you don't have...

Pink Floyd - money (First song on my list, can't believe nobody suggested this yet!)
B.G. - Bling, Bling
Notorious BIG - Mo' Money, Mo' Problems
New Radicals - You Get What You Give
ABC - How to be a Millionaire
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby
Jane's Addiction - Been Caught Stealing
Gloria Gaynor or Cake - I Will Survive
N.E.R.D. - Loser
Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer
SNAP - I've Got the Power
Jay-Z - Money Ain't a Thing
Public Enemy - He Got Game

Some of em' are questionable, and the good ol' boys probably will do without the hip-hop and rap, but they play good with my crowd. Great list and thanks to all who contributed.. I've definitely added quite a few of your selections to my list!

I missed a few more I had, some definitely aren't poker songs per se, but it's fun for the players to guess the poker reference in each song chosen, wether it be terminology used or an actual line about cards.

Poison - Nothing But A Good Time
Allison Krauss - Down to the River
Eazy-E - Gimme That Nut (DEFINITELY NOT about poker, but a funny poker reference nonetheless)
The Cardigans - My Favorite Game
CCR - Proud Mary (I like to sing a couple lines of this when the river beats someone)
Guns N Roses - Patience

Note to everyone: Since the list is getting so long, I truly want to limit it to songs that can be directly tied to gambling in some way. Either mention some form of gambling in lyrics, or be otherwise related like Black Crowes "Remedy" being the Tilt theme.

This means no more songs that are just "great to listen" when playing poker... that could be anything. I think we also should avoid songs that have an unintenional poker term in the title but is actually unrelated, like Who's "Happy Jack" or Iron Maiden's "Aces High." Also, no songs that are only "money related" but not gambling related, there are just too many of them .

With that in mind, do you see any songs that should be removed? I'm trying to screen them as I go but if you spot something that might not make the cut point it out please.

Thanks,

Ten

Can't let this thread sink too far down. A few additions/updates:

Your unknown may be:
Tennessee Ernie Ford - "The Rovin' Gambler"

Bert Williams - "The Darktown Poker Club". From 1914. Later covered by Phil Harris and, under the more PC title, "The Uptown Poker Club", by Tex Williams and Jerry Reed.

Commander Cody and Willie Nelson have also done covers of "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke that Cigarette". I'm sure there are more.

Tex Ritter - "Rye Whiskey"
"Jack o' diamonds, Jack o' diamonds, I know you of old. You have robbed my poor pockets of silver and gold."

Bobby Bare - "Vegas"

Frantics - "Straight Flush"

Blind Blake - "Poker Woman Blues"

Troy Turner - "Lazy Poker Blues"

T. Bone Walker - "You're My Best Poker Hand"

Davin James - "Rollin' Dice"

Rex Hale - "Darn dem Bones"

Nelson Riddle - "A Game of Poker"

Corb Lund Band - "Apocaplyptic Modified Blues"
"Gather round me all you sinners, all you gamblers and card sharps...
"But roll them bones... You oughta roll 'em like you've never rolled before."

If betting on fixed fights counts, you can throw Charlie Robison's "John O'Riley" on there, too.

Slaid Cleves - "Broke Down"
"How can I take this losing hand and somehow win?"
This one may be a stretch, though.

By your criteria, there are several. As near as I can recall, "Deck of Cards", "The Joker", "40 Miles to Vegas", "Cash on the Barrel Head", "Queen of Hearts", "Money for Nothing", "Take Five", "Big in Vegas", "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That". "Give Me My Dime Back", and "Mack the Knife" have nothing to do with gambling, no matter how cool the songs may be.

The five in "Take Five" has to do with the meter. The song has no lyrics.

Great post Hedge. I've taken some off, and added a bunch.

Some of them have to stay, just because they belong. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Like Mack the Knife... it just reeks of Vegas in the 50's. Honerary titles need to go to songs like Money for Nothing, and Floyd's Money. etc.

I'm grabbing some from a thread on thepokerforum.com and I will update the list tonight.

There is this great Rockabilly band here in New Jersey that has a song about poker. *cough*my band*cough*

We are The Blue Suede Bombers. The song is called, "Hold'em Flair."

You can either listen to it directly (before downloading) at http://www.myspace.com/bluesuedebombers or you can download it from our website (for free) at http://www.bluesuedebombers.com

Wrote it years ago...and it's still a crowd favorite.

Betting on horses is still gambling, right?

John Prine - New Train
"Folding tables and a folding chair,
a folded hand of poker there."
Only a small stretch...

Restless Heart - Lady Luck
A song by a very bad late-1980s top-40 country band. Included here only in the interest of completeness.
