Yep, you guys cant let these people know you think this show is actually cool. Probably only like 5% of the people here dont like it.

I didn't watch it, but I'd wager that it was [censored] awful.

I have a feeling that more than 5% of hardcore poker-types won't like it ... but I still enjoyed it immensely, I'm looking forward to the next episode, and I'm fairly certain this will lead to even more growth in the poker boom as Network TV won't be too far behind....

Smell the waiting lists growing.

TV shows about doctors, lawyers and cops don’t reflect real life so why should a poker show. Anyway, the show is not really about poker, it’s about the characters, their relationships, conflicts, motivations, etc… Poker is just the backdrop.

Tilt was pretty good because it had some interesting characters and it drew the viewer in with the plot to take down the Matador. I’m going to watch next time because I want to see how they are going to get him.

Prediction: the girl will use the chewing gum tell to bust the Matador.

If you want to see a good poker show, watch Championship Poker on FSN. Everything else is just entertainment

You may be on to something. The show is an abomination if you base it purely on the poker, but it was somewhat entertaining.

I think it's like hardcore Led Zeppelin fans and the song "Stairway to Heaven", if you're a hardcore Zep fan, Stairway can't be your favorite song b/c all the newbs love it and it's uncool.

Yeah, it was somewhat entertaining, but a lot of things that suck are somewhat entertaining.

Like car wrecks.

I thought it was so far fetched it was almost embarrasing to watch. "The Matador" overacted so much it reminded me of that guy that was on NYPD Blue and CSI Miami (David Caruso?)
I think the dumbest part was to have the head of a casino partners with a poker player to cheat people out of money. Then to go as far as to having many other casino employees involved.

Having said all that I TiVod it and will probably skim through it next week.

This is the type of attitude the original poster was talking about, I didn't watch but all the "cool" posters say it sucks so I am going to be cool and say it sucks to, EVEN THOUGH I HAVEN'T SEEN IT. Geez, why don't you wait and form your opinion and not just jump on the offical 2+2 bandwagon. You play poker so I am guessing you can think for yourself? Is it a good show about poker? Maybe not but does it have some interesting characters and plot lines? Maybe, hard to tell after 1 eprisode but they did start to develop some that might be pretty good so I am going to watch next week and see how they progress.

It will bring more fish to the table, making moves and putting fish in higher games to "get out of the kiddie pool".

The show itself was say a 7 out of 10 on entertainment value, however, I just didn't like the light it cast "pro poker players" under. Just put us in a really bad light.

And no way is that dude anywhere close to Stu Unger.

i think what a lot of people fail to realize is that television these days is [censored] awful. let's all thank the network gods that this show didn't turn out to be a reality tv show where the person who draws to the slimmest odds and gets there gets voted off every week or some nonsense.

so, if you wanna say that this scores a 3 out of 10, that still makes it the best show on tv since rescue me.

This show is horrible.

I don't care if the poker is inaccurate. It doesn't help, but I'm judging it on pure entertainment value.

It was really bad.

I wholeheartedly agree. And not just to be cool. Based on any criteria, this show was absolute garbage. It was written and acted poorly, and was entirely too far fetched.

I may be off here, but in the hand with the ever so classic, "I've learned your betting pattern" tirade, didn't the main character have the nut straight? So why would he sit there agonizing over his opponents hand, if he had the made straight?

And I like the point that someone brought up on another post: it's always a good idea to heckle a fish as he's walking away from the table right after you busted him. That's the way to get him to come back with more cash. That's why I do that every time I go to Atlantic City.

The acting wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but the dialogue was filled with terrible cliches.

I really wanted to like this show... Granted, I will still watch it, but I'd be kidding myself if I didn't say it was poor. The acting, the writing, the premise, the characters... all below average.

Madsen is just waaaaay too "poker"... so cliche. Maybe they shoulda got Mickey Rourke. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

It's hard to believe the writers of Rounders came up with some of those garbage lines. Although, there was ONE single line that I thought was a bit clever.

-you played that hand like you had a big pair!
-i played that hand because i do have a big pair.

All in all, if I wasn't 'obsessed' with poker, I'd never watch this show again.

Too bad Jerry Bruckheimer or Aaron Sorkin weren't involved in this.

Scratch Bruckheimer, I just forgot he produced this:

The first episode wasn't great, but first episodes never are. Generally they are just to introduce the characters and give a characature of their personality to build upon throughout the season. I can't think of one first episode of a tv show that I have enjoyed. The most recent show I can think of is Entourage on HBO. I was so hyped up for that show and the first episode was a definite dissapointment, but after that the show was [censored] awesome. I actually thought the previews for next week brought some story to the plot. Will the "best player since the kid, ungar" team up with the matador?? I thought that was pretty interesting. Who knows, maybe I'm just some pop-whore who will eat up anything on television, but to me the show is worth watching on entertainmnet value alone.

With regards to the subject of this post, I think most people might answer yes it sucks but yes it was entertaining.

From a poker prespective I thought the show was a complete botch of what high stakes poker is like. Every character in the show cheats or colludes in some form. Poker room managers are portrayed as uppitty pricks, casino managers apparently are in cahoots with high stakes poker players, and the underground game scenes were a crack up.

But from an entertainment point of view, the show did peak my interest. Aside from some sketchy script writing, the character building was pretty good and it seems to have some good plot coming up in future episodes. Once I get around all of the lame poker cliches and ridiculous cardroom antics, the shows was pretty entertaining to me.

In a way this show reminds me of ESPN's other drama series Playmakers. Anyone involved in pro football will tell you that the show was a complete misrepresentation of the NFL. Football players probably watched that show and made similar comments that we make about our 'poker' show. But all in all, Playmakers was pretty entertaining to me, and I'm sure some of the football players enjoyed their show as well.

I guess we should just be happy that it is something new to watch other than "3" I'm sorry but "3" kinda got me worried about ESPN's original entertainment - pretty horrible movie. And as another poster wrote somewhere else on this topic - atleast it wasn't another 156th showing of the WSOP final table! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I will watch the show every week. It is really funny. It is a drama that had several laugh out loud moments.

As for the 'coolness' of the show, what are some examples that you can give us. I can give several examples as to why it is ridiculous.

It would be cool to have a whore in your private bathroom, to be in an entourage of three people who are basically models, and to have a life goal of 'taking down' the greatest poker player of all time, who is also similar to Darth Vader.

But it doesn't mean any of it isn't 100% absurd.

Everyone will watch it so they can come on this site at 10 PM Thursday night and laugh about it. That's why we watch it.
