View Full Version : Jackpot Jay: 600 poker pros make $50K a year

I would guess that, all in all, there were probably 600 people who play poker for a living and who made $50,000 or more last year.

Thoughts?

Sounds like positive advertising to me /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sounds way, way too low. I'd put it at at least 5k.

I'd agree that this is way too low.

The way that I think of this is ITM in a tourny is around 5%-10%. And if the stats are true then 70 million people play poker Right so I'm thinking at least 1% of those people make a living at least. So right there it is 700k people making a living.

There's probably at least twice as many making that much grinding out the limit games online.

He can't be serious. There might be that many making 50 K a year on Party Poker alone. I'm obviously exagerrating a little but geez come on, 600 people.

Sounds like a number he pulled out of his ass. Consider the source.

I'd say you're not exaggerating in the slightest. I have at least 8 friends who make more than 50k a year playing on party, some making lots more. I'd say there are easily a thousand making that on PP, but yeah, it's all a guessing game.

From reading the article that 600 was Matt Matros guess not Jay's. Nolan Dalla put it at around 3000 or so. Those are the "sources". But as Matros himself said

"But this is a highly unscientific guess. As you suggested, there really is no reliable 'information' on this, because this stuff obviously isn't documented anywhere."

I agree. I'm just some jackass college kid who nearly made 10k last year in his spare time. There have to be way more than 600 50k + pros. WAY more.

I would also agree that Jackpot Jay is actually stupider than Vince Van Patten...which I previously did not think was humanly possible.

i think that if you have the ability to win at poker for 50K then you are wasting your talents. geez that is a lot of work for just 50K.

Obviously he's never had a real job snowbank. He doesn't understand how damn HARD you have to work in the "real" world to make 50k after taxes.

There are quite a few people on this forum who could play poker less than 10 hours per week and earn over $50k per year.

10 hrs/wk * 52 week/year = 520 hours. $50,000/520 hours = $96.15/hr.

$96.15/$30 = 3.2Big Bets/hr at $15/$30. I am sorry Schneids, that is simply an unsustainable win rate. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

you're right. I want to fully use my talents to serve some giant corporation with an arse-hole boss watching my every move.

I also would love being told when I can and can't take a vacation and not getting to set my own hours.

If I had kids then I would certainly enjoy the opportunity to see as little of them as possible.

You're right....this whole bit about making $50k/yr sitting at home at your convenience is REALLY over-rated.

I can't say I've ever had a real job either though.(entrepreneur) I was seriously interested to hear what he had to say though, because I had a feeling he would tell them to go make someone else rich(job), which is most people's advice, and I wondered what job he would be telling them to get.

Agreed, I also think it may be more than you expect. This is even accomplishable merely 4 tabling 1/2 NL.

Not really. If you are 4-tabling 10-20 short or 15/30 at PP(and beating the game) then you might have to work 10-15 hours a week to make 50K in a year.

I don't really know of any other jobs that I, a 19 year-old college student, would make any better use of my talents, or pay as well.

Don't take this the wrong way... if you can make a living playing poker, I think you should go for it by all means. However, I'm not sure I agree that there's nothing that would make better use of your talents (depending on how you define "better", I guess).

Can anyone make an arguement, for example, that playing poker contributes to GDP? It's just transfering wealth, not creating any, isn't it?

Well I comfortably earn more than 50k a year from poker given the current climate but I do not play full time; i.e. I am not a pro so I guess I don't count as 1 of his 600.

Either way, his numbers seem nonsense.

going by what 2+2'er's say....I'd say about 25000 pros - all playing party poker shorthanded... /images/graemlins/grin.gif

if you can read past the bullshit though....maybe a few less - but probably not just 600 -

$50K per year may look good to a 19 year old college student, but it's not a very high target to aim for longer term for someone with a modicum of talent.

Cost-of-living can have a lot to do with it. If you live in a city where a single-bedroom apartment costs $2k a month instead of $400, then 50k doesn't look like much. Around here, $150k can get you a very nice brand-new house. My friends in the Georgia and Alabama area tell me cost-of-living is even cheaper. My brother lives in Chicago, and every time I visit it feels like it costs money just to walk down the street. And, New York, fuggetaboutit.

Today I learned California charges a waste/recycling tax when you buy a new TV at Best Buy. Crazy. I don't think that would fly out here. They had a hard enough time pushing through the extra .25% sales tax to fund the new Packers stadium.
