Lost a NL tourney with this hand. Did i play it wrong possibly by min betting since there were 2 diamonds out?

Having made the choice to extract more money from the hand -- a very reasonable choice -- you played it fine. The other guy got lucky. It happens. If you had bet more early, he probably would have gone over the top anyway, and the result would have been the same. Your real problem would have been if you were against JK, but losing a flopped straight (where you do not have the bottom card or cards) to a higher flopped straight is like losing set vs. set -- not much you can do about it.

he had a lot of outs... any J would have also given him the win.

I would make a pot sized bet on the flop and then push if the turn card is not scary. The $50 bet on the flop does not accomplish much.
