I also thought it sucked when I saw it, but oddly I for some reason find when people use the quotes from it or talk about a few select scenes in the movie, that I think its hilarious. I guess it shows that a few random funny things can't make a good movie by themselves.

I've heard a lot of good things about it, but haven't watched it yet.

Exactly. I didn't really like the movie, but a lot of the lines and situations are so damn funny.

I loved the movie for the reason you stated.

It's a pretty sophisticated movie, I woudln't expect everyone to like it /images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

I saw a few minutes of it, didn't like it too much. I have a friend however exactly like the main character. In fact he was so much like the guy that I'm sure he would have been funnier and better in the movie himself.

It has NO plot, it doesnt get any less sophisticated than that.

That being said, its kind of funny, just cuz its so stupid and has some cool lines.

Real life, has no plot, it just happens. I would think it more sophisticated to capture the essence of a person, than to lay down a story.

Any movie that is 90 minutes long should have a plot unless it 's a porno.

EDIT: unless it is a Seinfeld movie.

why do people rag on the movie cause it doesnt have a plot. Theres about a zillion (both hilarious and unfunny) comedies with terrible plots that are just vehicles for the jokes. why not a movie that doesnt feel this need?

YourFoxyGrandma

Terrible plot and no plot are two different things.

Also, since Napoleon Dynamite sortof looks like an artsy film, people expect a little more out of it.

This is definitely true. I think that people also tend to severely overrate movies that are immensely quotable but not actually that great. Office Space, Meet the Parents, and Blazing Saddles fall under this category....though Blazing Saddles isn't bad persay, it just stops being funny 2/3rds of the way through, though the first 2/3rds are hysterical.

lots of mixed reviews. I heard Howard Stern and his crew talk about how much they loved it. It is high in my Netflix queue but right now its a "long wait" according to Netflix.

Oh well I will watch and form my own opinion. Because of the mixed reviews my expectations are fairly low so I bet the movie exceeds them.

Funny, I just saw it last night as well and thought it ruled.

I think the biggest difference is if you knew some like this kid which I thought was played perfectly.

i watched it tonight too. totally forgettable and they *SERIOUSLY* dropped the ball on the music. they could have added massive amounts of atmosphere with more melodic/string stuff instead of the "HI WE HAVE A QUIRKY MOVIE ON OUR HANDS FOLKS" bloopy/bleepy short tracks. 'your mom goes to college' was pretty awesome though.

This is a joke, ya? The music is not the reason to be watching this movie, although I do like the White Stripes track in the intro.

It was funny (several moments made me laugh out loud, which is extremely rare).
It had a plot.
It was a good plot.
The characters were likeable.
The music was intentionally simplistic (and fit with the film).

no, it's not a joke, ya. music is a gigantic part of movies. give something like the royal tenenbaums bloops and bleeps, how would it change your opinion? how much does the score to star wars matter in everyone's opinion? take that away and you arguably no longer have a classic.

Ummmm, wow. Music is not always a big part of a given movie
, this being a good example. I like Die Hard alot, maybe the best action movie ever, lemme think was there any music in there, maybe some Christmas shite who cares. The point being either you find ND very funny on its comic merits or you dont. The Jamiroquai bit at the end was pretty good, though.

astroglide
01-17-2005, 03:40 AM
i'm not referring to music to make things funny, i'm referring to music to make the movie actually flow and involve the audience properly. action movies, like die hard, do this with suspense music (which does affect you). i think if this movie were given to a pre-life aquatic wes anderson just to select the score, for example, it would have been a better movie. bloops and bleeps just make it feel like a joke (not ha ha)/commercial.

Yeah, I watched it on Thursday night. Well that is, I was watching it with a couple friends and I left the room after about 40 minutes. I couldn't help but think it was a bad quirky movie made for the sake of being a bad quirky movie. *yawn*

Since none of you have bothered to mention any of the jokes in the movie, Im gonna go out on a limb and presume you dont get them. You cant really explain or intellectualize humor, but why bring the score into it?

you're an [censored] if you think we "don't get them". are people who didn't find bob sagat on america's funniest home videos hilarious unable to get him? i brought the score into it because it's a huge factor in a movie.

Over the past few months I have come to realize that Napoleon Dynamite is probably the worst movie ever made, although I have yet to see North or Battlefield Earth. I don't really feel like re-typing out my thoughts again, so here's a cross-post from another forum:

"So I'm sitting here, munching on some string cheese and playing snakejump, while listening to a sublime Eno/Fripp composition in the background, perfectly content with myself and everything else in life.

And then I read this thread, and have to relive those endless hours of torment that this movie caused me. It's like the proverbial moment before you die or whatever, because this movie was as close to death as I will ever come. It's even more real than death itself.

It's not funny. I didn't laugh once. I spent most of the time being pissed off that I not only spent $6 watching this shitty-ass movie, but that I was wasting a very promising afternoon watching what is undeniably the worst movie ever produced. The characters are not likeable. The movie has no consistency, no relevant plot, and is absurd merely for the sake of being absurd. Like the dude's outrageous black girlfriend? WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT SEQUENCE? PLEASE SOMEONE EXLAIN IT TO ME. I re-watched the first 10 minutes with a friend the other night, and didn't realize how disconcertingly abrupt the transitions were from one scene to the next. I hate that directing style. It is often utilized to supplant an utter lack of any content.

I don't know if I mentioned it before, because in all my rage I usually repeat stuff, but the characters are probably the most hateful, pointless people ever to exist. Napoleon is a [censored] idiot. I doubt his IQ exceeds room temperature. He spends his entire life pissed off at people for hating him, and then gets more pissed off when he realizes people still hate him. And all the while, they hate him because he's always pissed off. How is this supposed to be funny? It's pathetic, is what it is. I felt sorry for the goddamn bastard. But then when I realized how absolutely suicidal he was, I wanted to put him out of his misery.

It's the kind of movie (I think I read this from ebert) that is trying desperately hard to be funny, and then acts like it has no idea it's a comedy. A pathetic excuse for a comedy, at that."

The weird thing is, usually I'm a perfectly normal person. I don't get pissed off at anything. I'm not cynical. But this movie evokes buried passions that I didn't know I had. It is the worst movie ever made. That is all.

People who use lines like this have no credibility regarding what's funny and what's not.
