I think there is a fine line here though. Both of those shows were made with the intention of amusing people, and I am willing to bet, the producers/creators made it thinking it wouldn't be offensive to most people. Ali G on the other hand goes to this rodeo with the intention of insulting and offending people. He does this on purpose.

I see your point that we shouldn't take everything so seriously, and believe me, I don't take a lot of things seriously, but I don't find things like this funny. One of my favorite shows, Family Guy, constantly insults people, and most of it is funny, but there have been a few times where there were things on the show that I thought were downright offensive.

Whoops! You've been brain washed by the state!

Better sign up for the "army of one!"

More seriously, don't you all realize patriotism and nationalism are two different things?

Nationalism, or the "blind faith in the nation" (including such trite symbols as the flag and national anthem) has been created by the state in order to decieve its young men (and previous to that to keep them from rebelling when it conscripted them) in order to give their lives for whatever their leaders what?

Patriotism, the respect and reverence afforded to our institutions and ideals that further human progress, requires critical thinking. Unfortunately, most people aren't actually capable of accomplishing the prerequisite for true patriotism.

Real patriotism isn't offended by spoofing the national anthem; this type of offense is simply a knee-jerk reaction from those duped by those who hold power over them.

As a further example: the National Socialist Party of Germany taught the state before all others: individuals were meaningless when faced with the furthering of the state's goals. This is nationalism.

When there is an adversary that threatens our way of life, our freedom to make choices about ourselves, etc., then there is a real patriotic reason to get up in arms.

Ali G certainly doesn't do the latter; he simply attacks a symbol of the former. In fact, he reenforces the institutions (freedom of political speech) that so many true patriots have died for in the past.

here are some simple defintions:
Nationalism (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Nationalism)

Patriotism (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Patriotism)

[ QUOTE ]
When there is an adversary that threatens our way of life, our freedom to make choices about ourselves, etc., then there is a real patriotic reason to get up in arms.

[/ QUOTE ]This could be interpreted either way. If the advesary is a foreign army, then its more nationalism. However, if it is our gorvernment, then I think it can be called patriotism.

Patriotism has everything to do with loving your country and its ideals.

[ QUOTE ]

Ali G certainly doesn't do the latter; obviously he reenforces the institutions (freedom of political speech) that so many true patriots have died for in the past.

[/ QUOTE ] Indeed, everytime someone insults other people they are simply reinforcing the ideals of our founding fathers, right? Fine, but that doesn't make what they are doing any less classless.

I completely disagree with dictionary.com's definition of patriotism. Whoever wrote that definition should be sent back to the "Adolescent Dictionary" where they only go for first-level understanding.

Since I am being controversial, here's another definition:

prop·a·gan·da ( P ) Pronunciation Key (prp-gnd)
n.
The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause.
Material disseminated by the advocates or opponents of a doctrine or cause: wartime propaganda.

I am trying to get people to think about why they believe what they do, and why things that offend them do so. FWIW, I am very angry about our politicians systematically lying to us. I would submit to you that many of the people targeted by the army are particularly suseptible to propaganda, and that the goals of the army and our political leaders are far more cynical than those who sign up to fight for them.

I want nothing but the best for our military, one of the reasons I say things like this.

The flag and the anthem are symbols...nothing more. To say that a copy or rendition of a symbol is worth than what its material value is is fairly stupid, and to want to kick someones ass over it is beyond stupid. Reminds me of a Bill Hicks routine(not verbatim, but the jist;

"I hate it when people get all sanctimonius about the flag. I had a guy come up to me the other day and say 'How dare you defend people who burn the flag! My brother died for that flag!'"

"Really? I got mine for $3.95. Look, 'Made in Taiwan'"

It seems to me that most people who are fervently proflag/anthem, etc, really don't understand what it truly means.

P.S. I don;t necessarily find this funny either, but then again I don't care much for Ali G. no, he is dumb because he thinks he can do things like this and nothing will happen to him. He isn't being courageous, he is being dumb and naive.

As for his writing, I haven't seen his show, so I can't comment on any of that. I have no idea if its funny or not.

I'm just curious what your parents/parents parents went through to become so patriotic.

oh, well, both of my parents dads were in WWII, and I think that carried over to there family and kids. My grandmother worked in some factory or whatever that was called during WWII.

I guess its hard to explain, but I just know my parents have always had a lot of reverence for America, and I assume that came from their parents. My dad, and nearly all my uncles on both sides of the family were all in the military as well.

Hahahahahahahahahaha.

This is amazing. Almost as funny as all of you getting worked up over it. Listen to Wayfare. He is actually approaching the situation with the logic and reason of a sane individual.

I find it funnier that some people go out of their way to defend such acts of stupidity. Let me first say that I'm not offended by this in the least. Actually, I almost find it funny, but burning a flag... butchering tha national anthem... these are all signs of disrespect, pure and simple. It's not about being brainwashed by commercial or being overly nationalistic (BTW wayfare's application of nationalism vs patriotism missed the mark by a lot). It's about having a little bit of pride of your country. You don't have to be gung-ho, "GO AMERICA!! AMERICA ROCKS!!!" to see this.
