It's a toss up for me between Richard Prior and George Carlin... I'm leaning more towards Carlin though.

While Carlin is funny, he is not even CLOSE to the funniest. Prior is a serious candidate.

i disagree. i was thinking george carlin or prior as well. george carlin also writes the only books that can make me laugh so hard that tears come to my eyes with noone else around.

Poor old Richard Prior...

George Carlin will remain at or the near the top of my list forever just because he's like 97 and just starting to realize that he may have a drug problem.

I just started reading When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops...pretty good so far... every now and then I just pop Napalm and Silly Putty open to any random page and laugh my ass off... what a funny SOB. Maybe he should write a poker book next /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Carlin was always my favorite, he can make you laugh and make you think at the same time.

I'm going to vote for George Carlin.

I've seen him twice live. It was the same act both times. It was just as funny the second time as it was the first time. I'd pay to see him again right now.

I'm suprised no one has said Lewis Black yet. I saw him live about 6 months ago. He is a riot!

Also in this list should be Richard Prior, Rodney Dangerfield, and Robin Williams. These were some of the funniest people of our time.

I agree. I saw him live a year or two ago. He's ancient now. He walked out onto the stage in sweats, not really knowing where he was. Then he just started talking. Two of the funniest hours I've ever paid for.

Dennis Leary. No Cure for Cancer is probably the best stand up I've ever seen. Then Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, etc. in no particular order.

I'm not a fan of Cosby or Pryor.

I've always loved Steven Wright, though his 'act' is more just a buncha one-liners. I love his stuff though.

Don't get me wrong, I think Bill Cosby is one of the tops! One of only a handful of comedians who can make you die laughing without swearing. He was great at painting a picture with words.

Kevin Knox. Seen him in Vegas and A/C. He hits home.

I still remember a Carlin record from 25 years ago when he said that when you're ready to die, God should give you a two minute warning to get your siht together.

Yea I love that kinda humor, that really dry, clever, witty type of stuff. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Cosby, Carlin, all the other great comics, but for me, less is more, and Steven Wright really gets me laughing with very little.

Cosby is the only comedian I've seen live. He was hilarious, but Robin Williams' stand up is the funniest. Chris Rock is a close 2nd for me. There's something about Chris Rock that just makes me want to laugh at him, regardless of whether or not he's talking.

Darrell Hammond, Steven Wright, and Eddie Izzard are up there.

The best joke, however, does come from Bill Cosby:

And because of my father, I thought my name was Jesus Christ. That's all he . . . JESUS CHRIST! My brother Russell thought his name was Damnit. "Damnit, will you stop all that noise." "And JESUS CHRIST, SIT DOWN!" So one day, I'm out playing in the rain, "Damnit, come inside." I said "Dad, I'm Jesus Christ."

Ah good call. Saw him when he came to town a month or two ago, very funny stuff. Wish he would crank out more new material though. I guess thats true with many working comics though. Heck, I saw Pablo Fransisco twice, about 2.5-3 years apart, and his act was almost identical to the word.

I vote Lewis Black, Dana Carvey (yeah, shut up) and Eddie Murphy. Richard Prior wasn't so much funny as he was completely different from everything people were doing. Eddie during his Raw and Delirious days was absolutely on top of his game. Lewis Black is outstanding live. FUNNY FUNNY MAN.
