I work for Wells Fargo. I am a QA tester for Online Bill Pay. I do not test the Online Bill Pay that some of you may use at WellsFargo.com. Instead, we set up Bill Pay for other larger companies. In some cases they come to us and ask us to set up a site for their customers to log into and pay their bills. In other cases, we set up a system where these companies send us daily or monthly statements and we deliver those statements by fax, email, displayed on a secure web page, or by regular mail, to a large customer list.

Anyway, I live in Minnesota. My upper management is located in San Francisco. My developer(s) are located in Arizona. Recently a decision was made to relocate the QA portion of this operation to Arizona. They gave me the option of whether I wanted to move down there and continue doing what I do, OR to stay up here and do the same thing but with another department.

I thought about it over Christmas and came back with two demands. 1) I want a 10% raise to cover the cost of two or three flights a year to come back home (MN/WI) to visit family a few times a year. 2) None of the costs of moving should come out my pocket. I want the entire move paid for.

Well, last Friday my team lead pulled me aside and said that he thinks they will meet my demands but it may not happen until March. Meanwhile, they may send me down there for a couple weeks (soon) to train some new hires and also train some existing employees on some of the stuff I do. That way I can also use that time to look for apartments and scope out the area. The only thing he didn’t have was the details on how much and what they will pay for regarding the move.

Now, I have moved quite a few times but it’s always been short distances. I have always had family around to help move the larger items, etc. I don’t think I will have that available this time. I have tons of questions for anyone that has experienced anything like this before.

Were my demands within reason? Do you think I could have gotten more?

What are some things I need to be on the lookout for in an apartment if I move to Arizona? (I know you need air conditioning – I mean things that may be different because of the weather, bugs, crime, etc). For example, I noticed most apartments down there come with washer/dryer. That is different than from up here. Also, I noticed most have fireplaces. Is this for looks or do they actually use them?

How the heck do you move that distance? Do you hire a moving company and do they carry all the heavy items? Do I drive a Uhaul and have my car somehow moved down there? Do I drive my car and have my stuff (perhaps a Uhaul) somehow moved down there? Do I fly and have both my car and other stuff moved? What other options are there?

Sorry if this sounds trivial. I guess I am just looking for options because I have never been through anything like this before and never really gave it much thought. I have a company card and I expect they will simply tell me that I have a limit to spend and to use that and then submit the receipts.

Any help on what some of the options are, how much some of them may cost, and/or answers to some of my above questions is much appreciated.

There was a thread on this fairly recently, which included my rant against UHaul so no need to repeat it, but I wouldn't recommend them. If you move yourself, use Penske since UHaul doesn't guarantee the vehicle will be available, even if you reserve it.

Moving Yourself = Major Pain in the Ass

The other extreme, of course, is movers, which is much more expensive, but if your company's paying then I'd go that route. Typically when a company is paying, they expect you to do this so the cost is covered.

The third alternative is somewhere in the middle, and is the one I like. There's a company called P.O.D.S. that delivers this big white storage container that you pack yourself. When you're ready, they pick it up with a forklift, put it on a truck and deliver it wherever you tell them. That way you can take your time packing, make sure it's done right and you don't have to worry about driving a truck. Then you can drive your own car there too.

You can get online quotes from a number of moving companies as well as PODS and Penske, UHaul, etc. Go to monster.com. They have a moving site that's pretty good.

It does get cold in AZ, hence the fireplaces. Phoenix? Is that where you are moving to? Phoenix is badass man. I'm seriously contemplating moving out there myself.

As far as if you got enough for the move and all that, I'd say I guess so. My section of the IT world (VOIP, Routing/Switching) is kinda stagnant, so I think any raise/allowance is badassed.

If you can manage it, get a Uhaul (the answer to this question is how much stuff do you have?) and get some buddies to roadtrip with you.

Enjoy it.

Now that I think about your money question, do you think you could have gotten more out of them? If no, then awesome job, if yes, hey, you got more than they were gonna offer, right?

Have fun.

What's badass about Phoenix? I always thought is was kind of a shithole.

Phoenix is what Atlanta was 10 years ago...a smaller city up and coming.

Atlanta is a giant cesspool of shitty traffic and too many soccer moms now.

I'm seriously considering moving now.

The move would be to the Chandler area. I want to find a place between my new work location and Casino Arizona. I've been there for work once and also stayed there a few days for part of my spring break back in college. I love the area.

As for my pay increase, had I opted to stay here in MN, I would not have received an increase. I felt this was an opportuity to "go for it" and see how much they really wanted me to move with the product. I make decent wage for a single person so I am not hurting for money but felt this was also one way to justify it with the family. One of those "can't pass this up" kind of situations. I have a close family and they wont like the move much so I used that as an excuse for the increase (to fly back a few times a year). My brother told his 6 year old daughter I might move and she started crying. I felt bad but what are you going to do? Soon she will grow up and have more friends in school and these things become less important.

Everything still hinges on what and how much the company will pay for. Right now I am just exploring my options. I fully expect them to cover the entire move. I don't want to ask any members of my family to take time off from work to help me move. That isn't right either. I wouldn't mind driving my car down there but don't really feel like driving a truck full of my stuff.

So much to think about....

No moving advice except I have moved in and out of the Twin Cities and used Beltman. I really liked them. I do not know if they go out of state.

Your demands were reasonable but QA testers are somehat a dime a dozen are they not. I used to be in online development at West Group and i found out the hard way that I was easily replaced. Which brings me to my next point.

I was asked to train some employees at another location how to do my job and within 6 months my job function was transferred to that facility and I was gone.

Hope it all goes well.

Where in Atlanta do you live? I'm about 98% sure I'm the only southsider on these boards.

That's because you live in Alpharetta. Isn't that where the soccer mom was invented?

You should me more of a non-status town like Acworth. I love it there.

My dad lived in Smyrna, Alpharetta, Marietta and now Acworth, where I think he'll be until he decides to move to Florida. I've lived in Peachtree City for the past 14+ years, and now am smack dab in the middle of Midtwon.
