This doesnt work w/ some words. This is also why i constantly misread words.

Give us examples of words that don't work well.

It is also easier if you are reading a sentence, rather than an isolated word - it took me a minute to figure out augie's word. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The sentence thing is very true. I cant think of an example at the moment, but ill try.

Words ending in S (such as PENIS) don't work well because your brain associates it primarily with plurality, so it skips the S and looks at the second to last letter. I wonder if it would work if words ending in S kept the first, last and second to last letters the same.
