I really enjoy playing certain video games, especially against other people, but I have a hard time justifying all the time I spend on it. I've played many hours a week, but have nothing to show for it.

Is there a such thing as real money buy-in tournaments for something like Halo 2? Or any way to make money playing online video games?

There is some serious money in video games, unfornately if you think you play a lot now, be prepared to double that to be competitive. Check out www.thecpl.com (http://www.thecpl.com) They have Halo 2 there.

Are those payouts winner take all?

How does the structure work? /images/graemlins/confused.gif

From the look of these payouts, you would literally have to be one of the very elite players to make actual (see: joblike) money at this.

The prize for CS is amazing though. That game never dies.

CS is the King of CPL. I used to have a couple CPL servers that I would frequent... those guys are just SICK!

I believe video games are HUGE in South Korea with a lot of money floating around in sponsorship. I think the top pros are making $100K+ p.a.

They also air on primetime TV top videogame matchups. I watched one once... the top2 StarCraft players played each other and the #1 guy got smacked hard.

Yeah. All the money is in Starcraft there.

I'm pretty damn good at that game, but I couldn't compete with those guys if my live depended on it.

CS, although on a downswing, is still by far the most popular computer game out there and first prize at CPL tends to fluctuate around $60K.

Isn't poker a video game?

But in all honesty you need to be one of the best in the world to make a profession at a certain game.

I don't know if I could ever spend enough time to win a 60K tournament like that. I'm sure some of those gamers are real addicts.

I'm thinking more $10 Party SNG style /images/graemlins/cool.gif

They should definately start something like that, if they don't have it already.
