How's the action at Commerce during the week? Are some days busier than others? I plan on making a trip during the week, are there mostly regulars there, or can I expect some loose soft action?

Always lots of tables - I got there on New Year's Day at 5:30 AM, and the big NL game that I usually play wasn't even running, so I went to the 100s & 200s and they had like 12 tables going - So, to answer your quaestion - It's always rocking - and the games are incredibly soft - Day or Night, Weekdays or Weekends - It's LA, it doesn't matter.

What on earth do these people do if they're there on a weekday afternoon and they're not making their money at the poker table?

I only ask because in the few times I've been to Vegas to play 15/30 and up, the games have seemed noticeably tougher on weekday mornings/afternoons. I had assumed that would be the case in LA. (With that said, I play all the time at Commerce and HP and am quite happy with the play I see from at least 80% of the table each and every time.)

I was there the day before new years and they said they were running 27 $100 and 200$ no limit games. I think 10 $100 and 17 $200.
The place is amazing.

I saw info about this in one of Lou Krieger's books, he calls them "trust fund pros" in LA a lot of people have a higher expendable income than in other parts of the country, some dont even work, if you play long enough even if your not good, you will remember those wins andd many of these people think they beat the game, so they play often, and not everyone who plays during the day doesn't work. I used to play all day long on Tuesdays because it was one of my days off. Poker also attracts many people who work in jobs that are 24 hour businesses(police, security, hospitality, etc) places that neverclose, so someone will always be working not necessarrily at the 9-5 most people recognize with.

Make no mistake though, that the games are MUCH easier at night, especially on weekends.

In fact, I very much recommend against playing any limit game during the day at Commerce. $15-30 and higher will be tough to beat for much and at the lower limits, while the players are bad, they do not play bad enough to create the necessary volume to beat the rake.

I can't speak so much for no limit, except to say that all you need is one or two bad players in a no limit game to make it acceptable. Really though, if you are playing daytime, you may want to consider entering a tournament instead.

Thanks for the reply's everyone. I definatly did not plan on going during the day. I know the games are softest on the weekends, especially at night. I guess I wasnt being very specific =P. I plan on making the trip one of these nights this week, perhaps after the passes. I would have made the trip this past weekend, but the weather + the traffic, forget about it!

Thursday nights have always been good to me.

Oh yeah, the games during the week are often just fine. If your table is too tight, just get a table change. Plenty of games going every weeknight. Like Shant indicated, Thursdays seem to be a bit easier(and busier). I guess its an end of the week factor.

There is nothing like the feeling of sleeping in all day until 5pm or so and then strolling into Commerce at 8pm or so and knowing that you are going to rape all the addicted slobs who have been laboring at work all day and are now stuck, tired, and emotional. Put a few of them on tilt, and you will have fun raking in money all night long.

Andy, I'm heading down on Wednesday (two days from now) and staying until Friday (we're driving to Vegas on Friday, although I'm not sure if we are going to leave in the morning or stay at Commerce to play for a while and leave later in the day). I'm planning to play 20/40. The games will be good? Is there another limit slightly lower or higher that tends to be softer than 20/40? From what people say, it sounds like the games there are always good, but this is my first time there so I'm wondering what to expect. Thanks.

I have heard from numerous people that the 9/18 is a great game. I haven't played in it yet, but next time I go I am going to.

If you can afford $15-30 or $20-40 don't bother with the $9-18. $9-18 drops $4 per hand + $1 jackpot. $15-30 and $20-40 charge $8 or $9 per half hour and you get free food. The higher limits are generally loose as $9-18, although slightly more irrationally aggressive. You will see players that raise preflop with hands like K10o, Axo, and Q9s in early position as well as three and four bet these hands

I've heard some people say that the 20/40 is softer than the 15/30. Is this true? Is there a jackpot drop in those games as well as in the smaller games? I'm excited about the free food.

Difference between $15-30 and $20-40.

It can vary. $20-40 is a 4 chip game so sometimes there can be the appearance of more action, when there really is not.

I would put your name on both lists and just kinda scope out the action. If you get a seat right away, just spend the first 30 minutes or so(free anyway) checking out the surrounding tables and don't play a lot of hands. If the table sucks, then change tables or change limits. If all the tables suck, and it is early, go play in one of the tournament sattelites or have a beer or something, and come back in an hour or so.

No jackpot at these games. But Commerce jackpots are so crappy anyway that you could win as much as a jackpot with a really good night at $20-40 or $30-60.

Unless it's changed (again) in the past two weeks or so, the 15-30 and above games also use a drop (but not jackpot) rather than a time charge. 20-40 tends to be looser than 15-30, and there will be 2-3x as many 20-40 games going as 15-30 at any given time.

It seems to me that at most LA casinos there are some limits that are very often looser then others.
20/40 is softer then 15/30
40/80 is softer then 30/60
9/18 is always insanely soft.
