sorry, if this has been covered before - I did a search but couldn't really find an answer.

I'm looking for a set of poker chips for my dad, and don't know what to get. I want to get a set of nice chips, but it doesn't have to be anything too special - he's basically just graduating from plastic chips - but I'd like to get him some nice clay ones. I don't care about customizing them, and I need something that I can order that will get here pretty soon (his b-day is coming up). Coming in a nice case would a plus, but isn't neccessary.

any sugggestions? thanks in advance

I would suggest Nexgen's - Nexgen's at 5star (http://www.5stardeal.com/deals/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=10-8000) - the normal price is 0.26 each, but I think they still have a 25% off sale going. On that page, select the little search by set link and then select 10-8000 on the pull down.

500 chips with a case was $118.62 with shipping and they came in a few days. I think these are good quality chips. You can get better for quite a bit more money, but you can get a whole lot worse for about the same.

Nexgens from 5stardeal.com are the best chips you can buy for < $150/set. As another poster said, you can find a lot of worse chips for $150 or less but for anything better, you are going to have to pay $350+ and maybe wait awhile.

500 Wooden Chip Case with Clear Top without Chips
Beautiful Clear Top Wooden Chip Case w/Cherry Finish $60
500 NexGen Chips $130
$190 discounted to $142.49 plus shipping to just under $160

I don't think that NexGen can be hotstamped although they list that (can anyone confirm?). Add $60 for one side on both faces, add $80 for different faces.

650 in standard case shipped is $160.

Or 500 chips, ground shipping and this case for about $175. Does Dad travel with the chips?

Nexgens at 5Star (http://www.5stardeal.com/deals/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=10-8000)

Scroll down for the info.

I have not laid hands on the chips yet. Despite getting some higher end chips, I'm toying with getting a larger tourney set, so I'm probably going to get some samples from 5Star...

Good luck!

I own these and I have to say "no" if someone asked if I recommend them. Two hinges broke the first week. For a "cheap" case, they are better than the aluminum ones though. They are probably in the top 50% as far as quality goes.

I also own two of these. I HIGHLY recommend them, for both looks and quality. THey are very nice, furniture grade.

However, not at all good for travel. Get cheap cases for taking the chips to your buddy's house.

does this case's bottom come out like the rack on top? Is it hard to get at the chips on the bottom?

These nexgens sound like Injection molded plastic with a slug. Why does everyone like them so much?

I'm wanting to get some chips myself, and I was just going to order a set of 500 dice chips off ebay for $45 (including s/h), but after looking at those Nexgen chips, I like the look of them better (and I'm sure the quality is better).

TenPercenter, is your only complaint with them the case? Or are the chips lacking in quality as well?

They are injection molded w/slug. They are the BEST available injection molded/slug. Does that make them better than clay? Uh, no.

The wait time for pokerchips.com is three months, if not more. Try TR King, they have "cheaper" clays as well.

There are three classes of chips:
CHEAP: (< 25 cents/chip) - injection molded. Nexgens are the best, also near the most expensive of this class.

MIDDLE CLASS (45-70 cents/chip) - plain clays at the bottom end of this class, non-customizable ceramic/clays at the top end.

UPPER CLASS (80+ cents/chip) - customizable clay/ceramic.

IMO, the Nexgens are easily the best of this class and for cost and availability, can't be beat - unless you really want better, then you have to move up in class (and price).

As far as being injection molded plastic, these things don't have the slick plastic feel or the crappy sound of the plastic dice chips, et al. My wife handles chips all day long in the casino cage and thought these felt pretty good. She scoffed at the cheap dice chips as "toys". As always, YMMV. Also, you can get samples from 5star cheap and decide for yourself.

Would I rather have some high end chips? Sure, but I just don't have the $$$ right now, and the Nexgens are pretty darned good for the time being.

I'm going with nexgens for my next set because of the price. If price wasn't an issue I'd get edgespot clay chips with a custom inlay. I also like chipcos but the edgespots just do it for me. I'm planning on 700 chips with racks from 5stardeal, an elite chip case from gamelandsports.com and labels by lynbark. Total cost shipped will be under 0.40 a chip. They will be good enough for my $25 games, if I ever get friends that want to play for $100 a buy in or more then I'll get real chips. I can't justify spending more than a dollar on a chip that's worth a quarter /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I had an oak w/o the clear top. I replaced the rear hinges within a few months but then the latches broke. I've sinced replaced it with the mahogany case as well as a very solid custom wooden 1000 chip case for my paulsons.

Sorry. I realized you meant his "not good for travel" comment. That's gotta be the case, not the chips. I doubt they get home-sick, or anything. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was referring to this comment SamIAm, he is saying he doesn't recommend either the case or the chips and I was trying to figure out which one.

$100 sure is cheap for 500 chips, a case, and 2 "casino style" decks. I'd be super worried.

"Injection molded ABS plastic" is dangerous. Even if it is "high-tech".
