His small bet on the flop priced me in. I was a little scared that he had AQ and wanted a call, but IMO it was more likely a feeble steal attempt, or some marginal holding.

Bingo on the turn, but it must scare him. I figure he will not be keen to call a C/R as he knows I could bet on the river as well, so I just call, and put out a smallish bet on the river.

Thoughts?

The turn is - offcource - terrible for the villan. Your line of play would probably make me fold any hand short of a queen on the river.

In your shoes I'd be happy to see him bet (AT?) the turn and try to squeeze chips from him right there. His smallish bid on the turn shows weakness, and a CR of 800 may be read as an attempt to challenge his no-queen-hand with a low Ace. I think he'll fold higher bets.

He could call with two pair believeing he is best and having 4 outs for the boat and 3 for the table str.

My point is that I don't see the villan calling the river bet without a Q or a death-wish. Nice play if he did

What do you think of these alternatives

i) Checking the river. From his point of view this must make it very difficult for him to put me on a Queen, and he might try and value bet a 2 pair hand, or continue bluffing if he does not have much?

ii) Putting out a really weak bet on the river. Say 800?

Of those two I like the small bet on the river better. Please take in account that I mostly play low-limit holdem ($1/$2 $3/$6) and cheap NL tourneys ($5-$30) on PartyPoker where I believe that the simple game is to prefer. Checkraising the river with the nuts is a pretty common move there, so I just don't bet in last pos. without a very strong hand or a good reason to bluff.

Perhaps in better company you would find action checking the river, but I would never touch it after your call on the turn.
