dead button confusion

Had the following situation come up in a tourney last night. I'm not sure if we handled it correctly -- the particularly questionable part I put in bold, but let me know if anything else was wrong.

This is a little hairy, so stay with me...

Hand 1) Seat 1 is the button, 2 and 3 post SB and BB respectively. Seat 3 (BB) busts out.

Hand 2) Button moves to seat 2, no SB, seat 4 posts BB. Seat 4(BB) and Seat 5(UTG) bust out.

Hand 3) Button moves to (empty) seat 3, no SB, seat 6 posts BB.

Hand 4) Button moves to (empty) seat 4, seat 6 posts SB, seat 7 posts BB.

Hand 5) Button skips (empty) seat 5 and moves to seat 6, seat 7 posts SB, seat 8 posts BB.

Did we handle this correctly?

Depends on what the "House Rules" are. There are two totally diiferent rules for this particular instance, but it appears that neither of these were followed.

The "Dead Button" rule (used in most House Games) basically states that the Big Blind always moves to the next player due for the Big Blind and the SB and Button adjust accordingly, even if it results in the SB being located at an empty seat and the the same person being the button (i.e. dealer) two hands in a row.

This is the most common rule, but the house could also use the:

"Moving Button Rule", used by most on-line poker sites and basically states that the button moves to the next player due for it and the blinds adjust accordingly.

If a house game enforces the "Dead Button Rule", often someone will object because "it's not the way Party Poker does it", but it depends on the House Rules. I don't believe there should ever be an instance where the button is located at an empty seat.

So, given that we were, was it a correct application?

Looks like it was correct if I'm following the action correctly. Just remember to move the BB to the next person due for it, and adjust the SB and button.

Was there a dedicated dealer? If not, who actually dealt the cards while the button was located at an empty seat?

The only thing I see wrong is allowing the player to move. Even though the seat is empty players are not allowed to move there location during a tourney.

I don't understand what you're talking about. No players were moving, only the button.
