There is only one way to avoid set over set.

Don't play pocket pairs.

You can still play pocket pairs, but only for top set value. So no more 22 for OP.

I thought I had cornered the market on snide sarcasm but ladies and gentlemen we have a contender!

If you've read super system, doyle talks about "don't go broke in an unraised pot". Unfortunately, barring reads this is a horrible laydown as your opponent will have random two pair more often. Note, 55 is the "only" hand that beats you as QQ raises preflop almost all the time.

Oh, it's so nice to be appreciated!

So how do i get him out of the pot to stop him from drawing further? If i "usually" have the winning hand there why let him try to make his 2p into a full house? if the board paired would i then fold? i'm no newbie, yes i am playing "loose" on such a small table so leave the snide comments for your Party $100 NL discussions please.

I would keep betting on the flop until he stopped or I was all in, although I would be about half pot on that drawless board. Min bets are kind of pointless I think. But you played it fine.

The snide comments were just for your awkwardly worded subject. Your play was fine. Sorry if you were offended.

I really don't think you have to worry about having an underset with AA.

im going broke here. Ciafonne/reuben talk about not playing small pocket pairs (maybe they said vs a raise) so you can avoid this situation.
so umm yea, dont play small pocket pairs or get used to it, thats poker for ya.

You cannot avoid set over set. Trying to do so will lose you money.

Why do you play pocket pairs? To catch a set. Your goal with a pocket pair is to catch a set and then get as much money in as you possibly can. All in is preferable. (Of course you dont want to push in you $7 on a $.7 pot, but you got the picture.)

You played pretty well, allthough i would've opened for $.5
I believe that it's more profitable to bet much and win much once in a while, when someone else has a hand like two pair or even a Q bad kicker(I've seen it happen).
If you bet a little you'll win a little, and you would be giving draws their odds.
So I'd bet a little bigger there.
He would've probably still raised you, and then you could go all in. Which is your goal with a flopped set.

I don't believe you need top set to win. Especially at the $10 tables. Especially against a guy with $5 left.
You just had yourself a really bad beat, and in my opinion it was unavoidable. I'd go all in on a hand like that any day.

Playing small pocket pairs is probably bad play on the high limit tables of Reuben and Ciaffone, but on the $10 tables i feel a flopped set is a monster.

I'd allso call a raise with 22. Any raise upto 5*BB from a raiser who holds at least about 8 times the amount he raises.
I actually prefer a minraised pot with small pairs beacause of the fact you're 8 to 1 against flopping a set, so you need either a family pot or nice implied odds

Is it possible that if your flop bet was bigger (say, the pot), which you could justify on the basis that bottom set isn't strong enough to slow play, and villain still gave you action, you'd seriously consider the possibility that you're beat, and back off the hand? Perhaps not - I'm just trying to figure out if there's some way for you to determine you're in trouble before you put too much money in.

I think in this hand, with no real draw except someone holding 34, bottom set is actually strong enough to slow play a little. I would've still bet about $.5, but his $.1 bet wasn't bad considering he was building a pot in order to raise/bet big later

It is the right thing to do, maybe you gotta bet harder when you flop the set

i'm afraid he'd have called...he flopped top pair and 2nd best flush draw...(from Kh Jc) board Kd 9h 2h

pretty tough odds when you're only up 7 to 3 when you've made your set....

That's tough luck. Still.. when you flop a set, especially with a flush draw on the board, u got to bet big. U don't want to give drawing hands a cheap card. If they call without the odds, it'll pay in the long run. Even if you lose now and then.

If you lose to a higher set, so be it. The majority of the time a set will hold up. If you stop playing pocket pairs I can't see how you'll make as much money.
I'd much rather play a hand like 88, then 98s.
