Not really all that big a deal, but.

Drew Brees, comeback player of the year? I always thought the comeback player of the year was a player who had great years followed by a bad year and then a great year. This guy had 2 mediocre years followed by a great year which to me is not the "comeback" player. His stats:

Year Att Comp Pct Yards TD Int Rate
2001 27 15 55.6 221 1 0 94.8
2002 526 320 60.8 3284 17 16 76.9
2003 356 205 57.6 2108 11 15 67.5
2004 400 262 65.5 3159 27 7 104.8

A much better choice would have been Corey Dillon. His stats:

Year G GS Att Yards Avg Lg TD
1997 16 6 233 1129 4.8 71 10
1998 15 15 262 1130 4.3 66 4
1999 15 15 263 1200 4.6 50 5
2000 16 16 315 1435 4.6 80 7
2001 16 16 340 1315 3.9 96 10
2002 16 16 314 1311 4.2 67 7
2003 13 11 138 541 3.9 39 2
2004 15 14 345 1635 4.7 44 12

That looks a lot more like a "comeback" player to me.

P.S. This damn thing won't let me line up the columns properly, but I think you can see my point.

I always thought a comeback player was one that had a devastating injury the previous year and makes an amazing return to the game, ala that RB in San Fran a few years back.

but then again, I don't know anything. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I see your point. I do think Dillon deserved it more.

But Brees was sensational this season. 2003 was markedly worse than 2002, and 2004 was a comeback.

The fact that John Kitna won this award last year makes me think this is not the case.

I don't know how anybody but Brees could have possibly won this year. The guy was one 8/29, 3 INT game away from getting permanently replaced by some punk who had never taken an NFL snap. Now he's a Pro Bowler and the leader of a 12-4 team.

Keep in mind that Dillon's stats from last year are partly because of his piss poor attitude, and Rudi Johnson stepping up in his absence. He didn't 'come back' to do anything except play for a better team, and get the bug out from up his ass. He's always been a great back.

The problem is brees didn't "come back" to a prior level of excellence. Its not like he was ever good before this year. A comeback is what garrison hearst did twice, playing well, getting hurt and comming back from injury to excell again.

Brees did nothing but suck up until this year. He's more in the most improved than comeback catagory, but they don't have that in the nfl. But either way, his spectacular season deserved to be recognized but there is this peyton manning guy in the afc, so they couldn't pull a move like they did last season by naming jamal lewis afc offensive player of the year but giving manning/mcnair mvps, so this must suffice I suppose.

How could you think Dillon is more deserving than Mark Fields? He had hodgkins and missed all of 2003 and then came back to not only play but be key in turning around that crappy start carolina had (he missed 3 games early with a back injury related to returning form hodgkins to quickly).

I don't necessarily. I just was trying to think of someone more deserving than Brees and came up with someone on the "home" team.
