So I heard on the radio the other night that some kid "discovered" that some band named Nickelback ripped off one of its own songs and released the rip off on a new album. Why is this surprising?

Contemporary big-label music is all formula. Find a sound that works and beat it to death. I would bet that the major labels have a recipe for what makes a hit (cord progressions, bass line, intonations....). Is it such a surprise that this band got lazy and stuck with the formula?

There's a reason why so many bands/songs sound alike. Just add water.

Never heard the band, by the way.

If you play "How you Remind Me" and "Someday" together, they do sound eerily similar. You can find a synchronization somewhere on the internet, but I'm too lazy to do it for you.

Unsurprisingly, those are the only two songs by them that I actually like.
