It's rational all the time. Whenever the pain is worse than you can handle, and there's no way to stop it.

It's usually very short-sighted, but surely it's rational.

Early in the morning, the only time I see it as rational is when it is a consequence of an act that brings about something you care more about. Horribly phrased, so here's an example: You have to expose yourself to lethal radiation to avert a meltdown that would cause massive damage. You may not call that suicide, though, since the purpose of the act is not to kill yourself, so here is an even more unlikely scenario: Your daughter needs a transplant, and the only likely doner is you, but it is for a vital organ and doctors will not kill you to save another, so you do it yourself.
