-In a local single table tournament where the winner of the table gets to go onto a bigger tournament so I guess you could classify it as a satellite.
-8 person table
-Everyone starts off with 500 chips
-Blinds start at 5/10 and double every 10 minutes so its like a turbo sng
-There are 5 people left
-SB is the leader with 1700, im in second with 1300 and first position has 300, second has 600 and last has 100 or so.

scenario-
blinds 20/40
first folds, second folds, last raises all in for 100 or so.
sb thinks for like 10 seconds then calls.
i look at my hand and see AKh.
i raise to 250.
sb calls imediately.
flop comes AKJ rainbow and sb goes all in without thinking.
one of the things i study most in poker is tells and i have been watching him since the dealer cut the deck, i have a very very good read on him and know he doesnt have anything so i call not worrying about the straight or trips.
he flips over 910o and says 'you've got me beat' as he's flipping them.
the turn is a 4
the river is a Q giving him the straight.
my question to you poker pros is how can i get away from stuff like that. sometimes my strengths hurt me more than anything. i know this guy has nothing but sometimes i wish i could just tell myself he has trips or a straight already and lay the hand down.

im currently reading sklanskys book (tpfap) and i know he stresses on not playing coin flip hands but the guy had 4 outs! it seems like it always comes down to that in a tournament for me. i play so well only to get pooped on and i sit back and wonder why the odds dont hold up as many times as they should. i know someone will say this stuff just happens and you have to bite the bullet and play again but in the last few weeks of playing these it seems like i almost always get beat out with hands like this.

thanks for your feedback

How to get away from things like that? Easy. Don't play poker. If you play poker, its going to happen, there's nothing you can do. Unless of course, you want to fold the best hand, and give up pots to inferior hands.

Why do you want to get away from that situation? You got someone's money in the middle when they were drawing to 4 outs, you were a huge favorite to win the hand (http://twodimes.net/h/?z=698585) , and to top it off, even if they hit their hand you had redraws to a better hand.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want that situation every time you played a hand.

If you're always putting yourself in high-percentage situations like this, it's not surprising that it 'comes down to that in a tournament'. You won't win every 80% chance you put yourself in. In fact, you'll lose once every 5 times you are in that situation.

And as for you wondering 'why the odds dont hold up as many times as they should', well, that's just selective memory. Unless you have thousands of hands documenting every case where you both won and lost theoretical 80% chances and could statistically show that they are indeed not holding up 80% of the time (within predicted variance), you're just remembering the times you lost more than the times you won.

Unfortunately, the answer to your question is a question.
If you somehow knew he had 9-To would you have layed down TTP?
The answer of course is a resounding NO. You should be so lucky as to be in this situation every time you get all your chip in the middle. This time it did not work out for you...disappointing, but 1 hand defines no poker player.
Last night I busted out of a $30 2-Table SnG in 3rd. KK against A-8s....not what you think - he caught running 8's on the turn and river. If I knew he had A-8 I still would have pushed.
4 hours later I busted out of the 4:30pm $11 R&A at stars in 48th place - ITM money was 45th. I catch A-A in the BB and the aggressive guy on the button throws out a 9K bet (blinds were 1.5k/3k...yea! just what I hoped for....I push, he calls the 17K re-reraise 1/3 of his stack with 8-9spades....he rivers a straight. Oh yes...a few cuss words flew (well more than a few) but today I am praying for that situation again tonight...perfect opportunity to double through on the bubble.
What more can you ask for than to be a huge favorite when all the chips go in.

Good point. What about his follow up in the WPT forum...
My admiration of Isabelle Mercier (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tv&Number=1492169)

This man has real potential.

I've been thinking about making a seperate post on this, but I can't quite put it into words. Basically, that's the beauty of SNGs. True, if you drive to the casino, pay your entry fee, labor through a few hours, then yeah, it hurts to lose when you're an 80% favorite. When it happens at a SNG, you just type 'nh' (even though you don't mean it) and fire up another tournament.
