So I just got my 2001fp today, and i am setting it up. If I am correct, you only need to connect three coords (usb, power, and the blue one). I am getting power to the monitor, but it isn't displaying anything. Any idea what I did or could have done wrong?

Dont have a 2001FP, but have another FP monitor. You say a USB hookup is required?? Never heard of such. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

Mine's still on the way, so i don't know this for sure but...

I assume you don't need to hook up the USB, so start by unhooking that. The blue cord, is that DVI ? ( akamaipix.crutchfield.com/graphics/infolib/homelib/dvi_connector600.jpg

If so, you should be hooking up either DVI, or VGA (standard monitor). If your graphics card supports DVI hook that one up, if it doesn't, hook the other one up. If you are hooking up NON-DVI (vga) and you aren't getting a picture try hitting the menu button on the monitor and seeing if there's an option for changing the default input. It may have DVI as deafult and need to be switched to VGA.

I think it has USB so he just thinks it's required to be hooked up. There's no logical reason for USB to actually be required.

Connect the upstream USB port (cable supplied) to an appropriate USB port on your computer .
Connect USB peripherals to the downstream USB ports (rear or side) on the monitor. (See rear or bottom view for details.)

I'm pretty sure it just has a USB hub as an 'extra feature'. I don't think it's needed. Maybe i'm wrong though. I guess i'll find out when i get mine in a couple of days (it shipped on Monday), since there's no way i'm hooking up the USB cable unless i have to.

My assumption as to why they just tell you to connect the USB cable, and not tell you to connect it if you plan to use the monitors USB ports, is to cut down on customer support calls. Calls like "my mouse doesn't work with my monitor" cost companies a lot of cash. Especially when the only problem was not telling people to connect the USB cable to the computer in the first place.

Edit:

Note the only time USB is mentioned in the troubleshooting page (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/2001fp/EN/trouble.htm) is when USB peripherals are slow or not working.

The USB is not required, I ran my 2001FP without it for a few months not knowing until a got a new camera, plugged it into the monitor and nothing happened. I realized that the last time I moved my computer I forgot to connect the cord.

Did you fix it? Try hitting the left-most button until it says "D-Sub", blue is D-Sub, DVI is white.

Did you try to self-test suggested by the Troubleshooting Guide?

Hook your other montior up and change the resolution your video card is sending to something like 800x600 and 256 colors. Make the signal as basic as possible.

Thanks a ton. Hooked up and working, just had to change it from 32-bit to 16-bit. Wow. Thanks!

Bwwaaaa hahahahaha....triumphant again.

I gotta think a monitor as nice as the 2001FP is very capable of displaying 32-bit color. Probably just need to install the drivers provided with the monitor.
