I'm from the area. Also I consider myself a classical liberal rather than a conservative. All this modern socialistic bullcrap isn't liberalism.

They didn't deserve to win before because they always choked in the clutch. You might say it was their trademark. Now they deserve to win, having performed like absolute champions in the clutch last year, so I'm rooting for them.

You see, I don't root for teams (or players) based on location; I root based on merit and heart. And they've finally got both. I think that means much more than merely which city they happen to hail from.

Hell yeah! Got to watch an updated "Curse of the Bambino" on HBO last weekend...it was so nice to see the postseason recap. Part of me is still waiting for the other shoe to drop, however.

Incidentally, I read a neat article in some techie magazine - can't remember the mag title, but it talked about the CIO of the Red Sox. It talked a lot about the hardware capabilities that they have and what this guy does and yadda yadda yadda, but it pointed out that in the seventh inning of Game 4 against the Yanks, Dave Roberts went back into the hi-fi area with this CIO guy and had him queue up tons of video on Mariano Rivera. Turns out Dave was focusing strictly on Mo's move home and his move to first. According to the article, Dave picked up something very distinctive in Mo's delivery to the plate that he hadn't noticed before. This was why he never hesitated on the first pitch.

The rest, as they say, is history. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think you should have dumped them too, some time ago, Joe. Sure they were down--because they chose to be down. They always managed to somehow find the one play to lose a cinch victory in the clutch...for decades.

I think you were just being stubborn. They stabbed you in the back umpteen times and played your heart for a sucker. But now they've changed wholesale, and they are finally a brand new team!

The New Red Sox deserve your support, and the support of everyone, regardless of location. The Old Red Sox really didn't.

And by the way, the Yankees now seem to have adopted the venerable Sox tactic of blowing an easy victory in the clutch. If the Yankees keep this up a while longer, they won't deserve to win another title for 100 years.

So Confucius say: Root for team that shows heart, not team that chokes.

I just don't think many Sox fans would agree that the "old" Sox didn't deserve our support. Now that the monkey's off their back, it seems very bandwagonish to root for them on the basis "now that they've won". Moreover, I don't think the "old" teams chose to be down - I don't think they chose to break their fans' collective heart / soul / spirit, but that is the way it turned out until this year.

Believing the things you posted make you seem very much a fair weather fan, which most genuine fans think is an awful place to be.

FWIW, I'm not being mean - it's more sad to me (albeit somewhat understandable) that years of frustration leads one to believe as you do.

andyfox
01-05-2005, 04:22 PM
This is all silly. You root for a team because you want to or stop because you want to. The monkey on the back or the tradition of winning is hogwash. What Mariano Rivera does or doesn't do has absolutely nothing to do with what Spakrly Lyle did or didn't do. Ditto for Jason Varitek and Carlton Fisk. What the Red Sox blew in 1976 has nothing to do with what they accomplished in 2004 and what the Yankees blew in 2004 has nothing to do with what they accomplished in 1976.

My perspective:

I'm a Bears fan. I have been since I'm 6 years old. (I'm 30 this feb) There have been so many times I've tried to stop rooting for them because I know they are just gonna rip my heart out and take a [censored] on it. But I can't.

That's what it means to be a fan. Even when you know you shouldn't care, you still do. And it sucks.

I used to watch all of the IU basketball games. After Myles Brand kicked Bobby Knight out I lost all will to watch the games. IU still did very well, but I just didn't care enough to watch. Heck, I even hoped they would lose every game so they would have to bring Bobby Knight back. So I don't think I am a bandwagoner. There has to be exceptions to the rules. There is a difference between being a fan and being a blind follower.

I think being a fan is being a blind follower. Case in point: I've lived in Los Angeles all my life. I grew up rooting for the Rams. They moved to St. Louis. Today, my favorite team is...the Rams. And it always will be.

Show me someone in Cleveland who roots for the Baltimore Ravens, and I'll show you a true fan.

By the way, sounds like you were more of a Bobby Knight fan than an IU fan...if you continue to root for Bobby Knight at his new job, then there's no need to worry about ceasing to root for IU.

wacki
01-05-2005, 06:05 PM
No, I liked IU's team as well. I just thought Myles Brand should keep his nose out of where it doesn't belong. The man has a long history of meddling in other peoples affairs. He literally kicked thousands of people out of their University/Greek housing using an unconstitutional guilt by association rationale and was also surrounded by numerous scandals. So what did they do? They made him president of the NCAA. /images/graemlins/mad.gif

MMMMMM
01-05-2005, 07:27 PM
Well Salt let me just say that I don't think any team should be rooted for blindly just because it is one's "home" team.

Either there is something special about them, or they try extra hard, or have great talent, or super heart...or something really special in some way. Rooting for the "home team" just because you happen to have been born in that area is simply mindless and IMO is no good reason to root for anyone.

You may call me a discerning rooter. If they don't really deserve it, I ain't gonna root for them, whoever they are.

MMMMMM
01-05-2005, 07:36 PM
My posts were just a reflection of what the Red Sox merited, based on years past.

Root for merit and heart, not geographical location.

The Red Sox now finally truly deserve to be rooted for. They earned it. The Yankees however are getting a bit close to getting on the list of teams who deserve to be kicked when they're down.

Maybe it's time for you guys to rethink why you root in the first place. Geographical Location = No Reason At All. Can't you come up with a better reason than...geography...to root for or against a team (or player)?

at some point in time if you happened to greatly like a home team, I see zero reason why you shouldn't still like them, even if they have let you down. True fans stick with their teams, through thick and thin. You can despair, but you can always hope. This is why Red Sox fans are so annoying.

I'm just trying to be logical about the whole thing, that's all. I think you should have a good reason to root for a team.

This is partly why I rarely follow sports, because there is not much that excites me except the truly rare stellar performances and infrequent amazing displays of heart. Without those things I might as well be rooting for my dog to catch the neighbor's cat.
