So... say there's 5 of us post-college guys going to Vegas for maybe a Thursday-Monday in March/April/May. One of us (me) wants to play poker as much as possible during the day (to fund the good times at night) at something like 4/8 or 5/10 and the rest are pussies who would probably bring about $250 for blackjack and the occasional bet on red. We'll all be trashed during non-daylight hours.

Where do we stay? We have one student still with us and some (as you may have guessed already) are somewhat cheap, so we'll be looking for a 5-man room. We stayed at NYNY last year and that worked out pretty well - there's a lot there to make the non-poker players happy. I spent all of about 7 total hours in the room over the course of our 5-day trip last year, but others needed a soft place to put their sore ass and spent more time than average in the room. I'm thinking cheapest place still on the strip, but I want easy access to the good poker rooms - the other guys don't give a damn who they dump their money to, unless we can get there during March Madness, in which case we'll all want a good sportsbook.

Any suggestions?

try this.... (http://allvegaspoker.com)

The best game I found was the game at Mandalay Bay. Plus, the poker room is pretty damned nice...I'd say of the places I've been to it's second only to the Bellagio.

Have fun and GL man.

IF you think you will be playing poker at least 6 hours a day, I highly suggest getting the poker room rate at Bellagio. I think it's $129 Thursday, $200 weekends. Mirage has a similar deal, but it's a bit cheaper.

call the poker rooms at those places (call the hotel, and ask to be connected to the poker room) for complete details.

those places both have nice locations, and are even close to the cheap casinos (Casino Royale baby!) that cheap gamblers like. with the poker room rate, it will be about the same price or even cheaper than other places, but Bellagio is about 3x as nice as even the 'mid' (NYNY, MGM) range hotels.

I actually never heard of the poker rate until I read it in another post earlier today. What are the general rules - just that I have to play a certain (is it 6?) number of hours a day? If we've got 5 guys in the room, do we have to put in 30 man-hours a day? I'm the only one that'll put in any significant time in at the poker tables unless I can get them to sit down at a 2/4 or 3/6 game (they'll probably not even sit in anything as high as a 3/6 - only one has any beginner's idea what he's really doing). Generally speaking, I have no problem putting in 6+ hours a day provided the room's good, except that I don't want to miss out on something because I've gotta put my time in. I've never played at the Bellagio, but it's high on my list for this year's trip and the only thing I hear is that it's the best.

no, it's just the opposite. All 5 of you would have to play a combined 6 hours (or 8, I forget which, so call to be sure). If you can give one of your friends a crash course, it would be real easy to clear the time requirement.

honestly, B&M poker moves so slow that w/ a super tight strategy, your beginner buddy could sit at the 3/6 with $100, play for 2-3 hours, get some drinks, and have very low bankroll variance.

the mirage has a 3/6 game that you can play to give you credit towards the room rate - bellagio's lowest is 4/8.

You're not going to be able to get the Poker rate for this trip because none of you are rated yet. But if you play at the Bellagio on this trip be sure to tell the floor guy that you want to get rated and he will give you a card to fill out.

Then when you play you have the floor guy sign your time in and when you leave your time out. Little trick. If you go in the morning, say, get them to sign you in and then play for a while. When you leave though don't sign out, go do what you want with your buddies and then when you play your second session later in the day just sign out when your done. With a full room and changing of floor people they will never notice.

Then your last day go to the little office in the back and give one of the girls your card and she'll give you her business card and the next time you go to LV you call her directly to book your room and they will give you the substantially lower Poker rate.

This may be true, but...

Last time I was at Bellagio, I went to the poker office to be rated (I had never used the poker room rate before). They told me that the next time I visited to just get rated while I was there, and they would adjust my the rate when I checked out.

I don't think they were trying to scam me; seemed honest enough. I think it cuts down on them rating less serious players.

Thanks for the info, Toro and Ken. So... what all is involved with being rated? Does that basically mean I'm on their mailing list, or does it do more? Is the Bellagio going to care that I'm playing the lowest limit they have (at least for now), or is a poker player a poker player (aside from the huge games)? When my dipshit friends and I show up in our Michigan Tech IM champions tee-shirts, are they going to care to have us, or are they going to suggest we try the room down the street?

It doesn't matter what level you play, only the number of hours. You won't be on a mailing list either, just will be in their computer as a rated player so when you call for a reservation they'll give you the rate.

And as long as your money is green I don't think they care what you look like.

P.S. I have heard of some people getting the rate for their initial visit. I think the way it works is that you have to book the room under the regular rate and then they'll reduce it down at the end of your visit if you've played the prerequisite number of hours. This is not guaranteed info though since I didn't do it this way only heard of someone doing this.

P.S.S. If you plan to play a lot at the Bellagio, I recommend staying there regardless of the rate. There's nothing like just popping in and out of the room to play. Plus the Bellagio is the nuts.
