One more small narrative to finish off the year.
I have to tell you all something, that I know a lot of you won't believe. Outside of tournaments, I have never had a $1000 day.
December was an up and down month. The first part of the month, I seemed to run into an inordinate amount of two and three outers on the river, but I had two sessions, where I won a lot of hands, and noone ever caught up to me, so I had won about what I expected to, but at the same time, it was just from those two sessions, and the rest of the time I had played back and forth.
The third week, I caught a little hot streak, and won just about every day, so I was thinking that I was going to have a good month. Then the fourth week happened, and I lost just about every day, and I was back to where I was in the middle of the month. I don't think that I was playing poorly, but I just didn't catch any cards. My VPIP was down about 5%, when I did win, it seemed like it was a small pot, and I had a bunch of sessions, where I was winning 30-40% of my showdowns.
I just resigned myself to playing well, playing out my hands for the month, and to see where I was at the end of the year.
Then on the 30th, I played a 350 hand session, and won nearly $700. I entered my numbers in Statking, and saw that I was about $1000 below my expectation for the month, and I thought, that's nice, but I've never had a $1000 day, so I guess I will just miss my goals for the month.
I came home from work on the morning of the 31st, and played a 300 hand session on True Poker, and ran very well winning $265 on one table, and $88 on another. I thought well, at least I won't miss by that much, and maybe I will have time to play a little this evening, because I don't think we were going to be going out.
So this evening, my wife and son went to sleep early, so I logged onto UB, and all of the full games at 5-10 and 10-20 were running fairly tight, with small pots, but there was one 5-10 6-max game that had an average pot in the high seventies, and it was only five handed. Game on! I grabbed the seat, and it turns out that the three players to my right were all fairly commited maniacs.
I just played tight, and waited for value betting opportunities, which I usually got three bet on, and then had to decide whether or not I wanted to cap it, or raise a later street.
As I was playing this game, I noticed that one of the 5-10 games had loosened up, and this one was nine handed, so I took a seat there.
Anyway, after about an hour and a half, and 220 hands, the maniacs had all left the 6-max table, and I was ahead $441 on that game, and $304 on the full game.
I decided that having my first $1000 day and at the same time making my goal for the month was a good time to quit, and have a new years drink.
Happy New Year,
Play well,
Good luck,
Bob T.
