I should add that the island of Hawaii (the Big Island) is also susceptible to a landslide (from Kilauea volcano) much like the Cumbre Vieya Volcano. In fact, remnants of ancient landslide deposits are evident under the Ocean on the SE side of the island of Hawaii.

The problems are well known and in fact large tsunami are historically common. Indonesia suffered greatly from tsunami in 1815 and 1883 from waves generated by large volcanic eruptions and also from earthquake events in the area that have effected the entire region. This whole thing is very disturbing to me for a variety of personal and professional reasons. Will this event prompt some change? I think the answer is very little if any at all.

Immediately after Cumbre Vieja's collapse, a dome of water 900 meters high and tens of kilometers wide will form, only to collapse and rebound.

Years ago my mentor in an aerospace company told me "You need to face the fact that if you know a fire is likely to break out preventing it will do little for your career. Instead be ready with a bucket."

Somehow I believe his advice had some connection to the lack of organized warnings in the Indian Ocean.

Roll the Dice.

With proper earthquake, deformation, and other monitoring, which I think is done, a short-term (days to months) forecast should be able to be issued and more immediate warnings broadcast in the event a large-scale collapse occurs. Of course, problems that always happen are: will there be proper communication to everyone through the right channels, will people listen and response properly, and also the old conundrum of issuing warnings and then nothing occurs, or not much occurs etc and etc. It's a tough call when in the trenches.
