Conditions like this are much more common than you think. Over one percent of humans are hermaphrodites. It isn't always a chromosomal defect, but more of a hormonal imbalance during developement. 2" clits on a woman isn't that uncommon.

Our common sense is going to highly biased toward what society has told us is the correct way to think, which in this case is that there are only two true human genders. Apparently the concept of "true" gender is askew and may not even exist at all. As for life experience, the vast majority of people born hermaphrodites undergo surgery very shortly after birth to "ratify" their condition, so it's no surprise most of us don't have any first hand experience with this. Based on what I've read, it seems like the surgery is only necessary for aesthetic purposes and to give a singular sexual identity for social purposes.

I'm still having trouble grasping a true 1% figure. Maybe its like an approximation, like its really .5% and they just rounded up or something. But even then that seems high to me. I'd be more inclined to believe 1 in a 1000. But then I guess maybe its just taboo and the people who are born this way get the surgery and the parents never tell them or they never admit it from "shame" so we never hear about it. But you still think that over the course of history back way in the day when they just stoned babies that came out with a defect that we would hear about it. Or from 3rd world countries that just have babies in the back of grass huts.

You have to realize that there are various degrees of this. Some cases are completely internal, and others are external. Almost all of the external versions are dealt with at birth and these conditions can rather easily be reversed. Almost all of them are reverted to females. (Females do outnumber males btw) Then there is the wonderfull news that the Kinsey institute thinks intersexuality is much higher than 1%.

When you work in the life sciences you realize that some statistics are wrong, but then you realize that many more of the unbelievable statistics are correct. Denial is a powerful thing. I worked for a Global Infectios Disease division and you would be amazed at how far Muslims will go to deny the existence of HIV in their town/province. I've had coworkers go into large rooms packed full of people dying of breadmold and the even the Muslim doctor refuses to accept it.
