View Full Version : Should I be drinking instead?

I play $1-2 holdem at PP due to the fact that I'm in college and don't have a poker bankroll built up. I play mostly for experience and don't expect to be making any real money. I'd like to get some kind of idea where I stand skill wise. Can anyone tell me if it's even possible to make 1 BB an hour playing 1-2 PP after you subtract the rake? Should I be happy breaking even or am I just waisting my time? Should I spend what little I have on alchohol instead?

In a word........yes. I am also a college student and have basically been killed on PP despite doing well in live games. The swings are HUGE. Unless you have a ton of cash on there, eventually you will hit a run where you will lose it all. Save your money if you are on limited funds and take a casino trip instead.

See "The Paradise Experience" above. Just play super-tight. Soon enough you'll be using PP to subsidize parties...with, like sorority girls, and, you know, beer, and stuff.

On a slightly more serious note, you might want to try to take a small portion of your bankroll and hop into a .5/1 Omaha-8 game this week. Might be an overlay there, given the bad beat jackpot promotion.

Spend a little on a spell checker or a dictionary.

I too am a college student and was pretty much in your situation about 3 months ago. I used to make western union transfers for literally $78 and grind it at 1/2 until I lost it all... I must have bought in at least 10 times without ever cashing out. I saved up $200 from my job ($8 hour) at the time and bought in yet again. I started playing 3/6 5 max and made a shitload of money, almost 3k in my first month. I can honestly say that the 3/6 games are a lot softer than the 1/2. The 3/6 games were so juicy that I haven't had to rebuy since and have quit my job.... I definitely recommend you try the 3/6... and try not to sit with those 3/6 5 max rocks like marco or mango.... look for someone you've never seen before and people with short stacks.......
