View Full Version : Cost of moving away from the big blind

If you change seats and move away from the big blind how much should you post in order to play the very next hand?

I was playing and hadn't missed any hands. After I played my UTG hand, I then moved to the cutoff and was told I needed to post both big and small blinds.

This doesn't seem correct (fair) to me. I think I should have had to post a big blind only. Afterall, I'm missing out on 3 hands and the best possible position.

I asked for the floorman and he confirmed what the dealer and players told me. I then asked for the floor supervisor and he backed up the floor man and the dealer.

Is paying the big and small blind correct after moving away from the big blind?

Thanks,

You skipped both your big and small blind, so you need to pay both.

Didn't I say in my post that I hadn't missed anything? I simply moved away from the big blind. I should have to pay as much as everyone else when I don't get a big blind, a small blind, or the button?

Is this rocket science? Am I wrong? Is it fair to have me pay the same price and only see 2/3 of a round worth of hands? Is it not penalty enough to have me post a big blind - post 3/4 the amount and see 2/3 the hands?

Please explain to me the why and how this rule works.

Thanks,

I think its a little to do with discouraging people to do what you did. Just don't move till you're the CO and no one will complain. Because you moved the guy to your left gets one less hand w/ out being a blind, and the rest of the table does too. If you just pay your big blind you are getting 8 hands for the price of only the BB when everyone else has to pay the BB and SB. Well minus the 3 you skipped it is still 5 SB free hands. If that makes sense?

You only paid one blind on the orbit, caused everyone else to get one less hand on their two blinds.

I see what you're saying. It is a little confusing I suppose. To me the orbit starts at the big blind and ends at utg. When I've paid my blinds, that's when I've paid for the priviledge of seeing all 9 hands (9 handed).

I see what you're saying about the other players not liking it because they all get to see one less hand for free on that orbit.

But I'm seeing 3 less hands and one of those hands is the best position. I thought you could always change seats and the most it would cost you to continue playing was to post a big blind.

I thought rules were made in an attempt to be as fair as possible. This rule seems unfair to me.

Thanks for your help.

If it seems unfair to you, just wait until you would be the BB again.

Problem solved.

You can't move from UTG to CO and only post BB, because that would be horribly abused in tight games as virtually free blind stealing. Hence you have to post the dead SB as well.

It also keeps the rules streamlining. This way it works out the same regardless of if you moved or sat out three hands.

The general rule where I play is if you move away from the BB <= 2 spots, you don't have to post. If you move > 2 spots, you post a BB. I've never had to post a BB and SB unless I'm away from the table and miss my BB and SB.

Apparently different casinos have different rules regarding this.

If you would have stayed in your same seat, missed the BB and SB, and wanted to come back in in the CO, how much would you have to post? Both the missed BB and the missed SB. You'd also miss the button hand.

You're now in the exact same situation, just in a different seat.

You were -- UTG. In the next hand you would have been BB, then after that the SB.

By moving to the CO, you skip both the blinds, so you need to post them both or wait.
