Whitesnake, 1984 Sam Houston Coliseum.

I was 9. Don't remember much of the show, except it was really loud. And Cool. Well, to a 9 year old anyway.

Ok, it really was my second, Billy Joel - River of Dreams tour in 92 at Madison Square Garden...that was hella cool too.

First concert ever? Milli Vanilli - my sister took me. It was gay as hell, they came out on wires suspended in air and were play fighting with Katana's in Ninja suits. I remember sitting there thinking to myself "How gay is this?".

My next concert? Not sure, I think it was either Ozzy or Bruce Springteen.

I was maybe 14 years old or so, 1976ish. Soldier field in Chicago. They were calling it the superbowl of rock. REO Speedwagon, Journey, Ted Nugent and Lynard Skynard.

I also saw Karen and Richard Carpenter in 1978 at the Stardust in 'Vegas Baby, Vegas' /images/graemlins/smile.gif

She died pretty soon after. They were great to see live and to listen to when chilling out. When I hear Goodbye to Love, I get sad because she had so much talent.

1980 or 81. Bad Brains, Gang of Four, and The Bush Tetras. Roseland. Can't remember if Bad Brains or Gang of Four headlined, but they were both great.

As you might imagine, this being my first show had two effects:

1.) Motivated me to go to more shows, because, obviously, this is the greatest thing the world has ever seen.

2.) Disappointed me for years to come.

P.S. Schizoid-lunatic H.R. did a BACKFLIP off the balcony.

To some people at least. They're a goth metal band that was semi-popular in the 90's (Bloody Kisses and October Rust being their two big albums), most people who listen to metal have probably heard of them. I've mellowed a bit since my younger days, but that was a really fun show.

It was either Hoyt Axton or Jackson Browne in about 1974 or so. I can't remember which was first. I never really liked concerts very much - Too many people, with the majority acting incredibly stupid and juvenile. Being a solid Christian by Nature, I do not approve of such behavior.

The scary thing is that at that point, I knew a LOT more about Gang of Four than about the Bad Brains. The only thing that possessed me to see them was a friend had acquired a tape which contained Pay To Cum. This was before the Let Them Eat Jellybeans compilation came out and made everyone take notice of them. I would have gone anyway, because I loved Gang of Four's retarded politics at the time (I was, after all, SIXTEEN). Still like the songs a whole lot.

Now, don't get me wrong--Gang of Four was a great band, certainly before, and probably including, Songs Of The Free.

It's just, I mean, what can you do? It's the f*cking Bad Brains.

Bush Tetras were just a momentary darling of the NY scene--certainly not worth noting, IMO.

(My first show SHOULD have been the VH 1984 tour, but I was only 12 and my mom wouldn't let me go -- I've never forgiven her for making me miss their last tour with David Lee Roth.)

But the Hagar show was good, anyway.

Smashing Pumpkins in '96 when they came through Canada. I still remember the opening of "Where boys fear to tread", played a million times faster than the album version, with huge banks of searchlights playing over the crowd.

My father casually mentioned once that he saw Led Zeppelin live in the late 70's- we've pressed him for details, but I'm pretty sure he was too high to remember much.

He mooned the audience and everyone thought it was soooo cool, lol.

I saw Sammy Hagar before he joined Van Halen. I think that was '85.

The free concerts weren't so bad though, besides country performers, which I won't name since I don't even like country, I got to see Joan Jett, Night Ranger, Huey Lewis, Hall & Oates, Billy Squier, and so many others I can't even remember.

I was around 16 and it was 1986, A buddy and I slept out and partied with a bunch of people outside the mall. Tickets for I think maybe Michael Jackson were on sale. We drank, and hung out with the chicks all night, got our wristbands in the morning, and when they called our number, we were like fourth in line.

When we got up to the window, we ordered our tickets. Four seats to the Lynrd Skynyrd show the following month. It wasn't sold out or anything. People were looking at us like we were crazies. It was hilarious.

Things picked up after that. First one that stands out as excellent was Trouble Funk / Fishbone / REM in 1985 (REM was introducing songs from the upcoming Fables of the Reconstruction and played a ton of stuff from Chronic Town, Murmer, and Reckoning), Living Colour in a 50 person club just after they were signed and well before Vivid came out, Janes Addiction at the Garden in Trenton, NJ just after Nothing's Shocking came out ...
