I'm fed up with the play money tables and refuse to play them anymore. I'm sick of everyone calling everything. Just wondering what the smallest size table money wise you guys would reccomend starting at and what my bankroll should start off as. I want to improve as a player and the play money thing just isn't cutting it anymore. TIA

Paradise, UBet, and Pacific have microlimits (as low as .02/.04 or $2 NL buy-in).

Go with whatever you feel comfortable depositing 300BB for.

I think $60 for .10/.20 is a good start, or maybe $120 for .25/.50.

I apologize but what does 300 BB mean exactly?

300 Big Blinds

300 big bets -- if the limit is $0.02/$0.04, then 4 cents is the big bet. If the limit is $10/$20, $20 is the big bet.

It's not your fault, but we really need an FAQ in this forum.

In this context,

BB = Big Bet

For example: at .50/1.00 limit, 1 Big Bet is 1.00 therefore, your bankroll should be $300 or 300 Big Bets.

Don't confuse this with Big Blind which is also called BB.

It's ambiguous, but for limit my understanding is it always refers to big bets, i.e. twice the big blind. I try to write "BBet".

Harrah's Las Vegas, the $2/$4 table minimum buy-in is $20. That's 10 X's the big blind. So what you're reccommending is a $1600 bank roll? Wow!

300 times $4 = $1200, but yes that is the typical recommendation. Your buy-in at any session is not the same as your bankroll (I hope); your bankroll is a float that should see you through your inevitable downswings.

As for buy-in, I hope you aren't going to play $2/$4 for $20. You want to buy in for at least 12 big bets in case you get a pat hand and someone to cap it every round. Since I might lose a few times first I generally don't feel comfortable sitting down with less than 20BBs.

I buy-in at $50. I have a line of credit at Harrah's. Craps is my main game. Poker, Let It Ride, and BJ is what I play to relax and stretch my money after I get my butt kicked at the craps table. /images/graemlins/mad.gif

As a beginner, you will most likely be a losing player at first. This means you need a budget, not a bankroll. I would reccomend that you play .50/1.00 or smaller, until you start to win consistently. Don't play with money you can't afford to lose. When you start to win consistently, you should maintain a 300-500 big bet bankroll. Don't cash out unless you can leave at least this much in your bankroll (or keep your money in a separate account or a netteller account if you don't want to keep it on the poker site. You should probably concentrate on building bankroll to move up in limits at first, though you may want to cash out your initial losses before you start moving up. You can take a shot at a higher limit with 200 big bets, but move back down if you lose half of it. If you learn to play well, and stay disciplined, you can build a very small initial investment into a bankroll that lets you play at a level that allows you to make significant income.

What if I were to play small nl games? Are there very many of those out there in the form of ring games online or casino?

They're certainly getting vastly more popular with all the NLHE played on TV, even though of course the TV version is all tournaments. Most of the big casinos that can spread some low buy-in NLHE ring game these days (e.g., Foxwoods game with $40 min buy-in, $100 max buy-in, $1-$2 blinds is fairly typical), and more online sites are offering low buy-in or even micro-limit NLHE.
