Yes, I actually took the time to send in a comment. I was getting pretty frustrated.

I'm John, from Atlanta.

Agreed. On the other hand, does anyone know who Ian for Mass is on party? I'd love to add them to my buddy list.

[ QUOTE ]

I've always found that the best time to play is during the day. At night, you run into all sorts of bad beats, because that's usually when all the kids sneak on.

You're actually giving useful advice to this mook? More importantly, you're giving good advice to all the idiots who read his column. Save it for here. Tell him that he's playing perfectly.

I also wrote a comment that got included in that article. Mine wasn't a clinic on how to get better at poker, though.

I noticed a comment by bobby hoff. I was wondering if that was someone's idea of a joke, or the real bobby hoff.

I'd be interested to know which comment was yours, although I know you aren't going to say.

I agree with the others in the thread though, I don't know why people want to give advice to a guy who has the ability to drive thousands of poker players toward the Sklansky/Malmuth books. (And Ed Miller too).

Unless whoever recounted it to me was wrong- his A5s hand was 6 max, making an UTG raise in a 20/40 game less horrible.

If the cat who claims that he's Danny from Vegas really is Danny from Vegas- you are a pretty mature dude. Keep being awesome.

I liked Jay, 'cause I thought he helped make me money. I didn't like him when he was spreading paranoia about online poker. Now I think I like him again, 'cause he's spreading some high quality weak-tight gospel.

The last word from his wife really ticks me off.

STFU about online poker, n00b!

Gosh! Idiot!

I don't think this is a big issue. Before the poker craze, there were good players and bad players. There were dedicated players and lazy players. Bad players went broke and left the game. AVERAGE players were losing players who supplemented their bankroll with other income. Info from this site and new, good books will likely create a lot of AVERAGE, losing players from previously bad players. This enables them to stay in the game longer. That was the thought when the first Sklansky/Malmuth books came out and there is no reason to think any different now. The dedicated, disciplined player will learn and improve. The fish will improve, but not enough to top the dedicated, winning player.

And that's why I sent him that.

I remember talk in the Psych forum about how players that are bad don't recognize that they are bad, and thus continue losing.

Players that want to stop losing will find there way here.

Exactly. It is not brain surgery to do a google search for poker advice.

Well the quote from me was taken largely out of context. I had already written him numerous emails in an attempt to help him out and the email from which I am quoted was largely about his column on online poker. I think it is clearly better if it is portrated as something honest, fun, and easy to make money at.

Is that THE Bobby Hoff that is quoted in the article?

spadeclub99

This is 100% right. The rest of you are so short sighted and must not have much confidence in your ability if you think someone reading a book will take away your edge.

Phat Mack
12-28-2004, 08:41 PM
I noticed Bobby Hoff's name, too. The comment made sense, so it might have been him. I would assume they would check something like that out before they published it, but Jackpot Jay might not know who Bobby Hoff is.

Is Hoff still playing in SoCal?

MaxPower

You guys need to relax. Jackpot Jay is no more a professional poker player than George Plimpton was a football player. He's writing a book.

I think he must know who Bobby Hoff is because that was the only letter that used a full name.

How about that quote from Dave in St. Louis - there is some great advice /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hey

If Ed sells more books because he printed my stupid letter then so be it. They are not going to magically make anyone a great player and cause anyone to have to play in a casino to make a living.

Wow - I just don't understand what folks are getting so worked up about. Do you think a statistically significant number of people even read Jackpot Jay? What percentage of those readers will even key in on "Sklansky, Miller, Malmuth"? Of those readers, which ones will finish the books and understand the concepts? Finally, what percentage of THOSE players will correctly apply said concepts?

I mean really - I can walk down the street to Borders and pick up a majority of the 2+2 titles right now. The aquarium is enormous. It is going to take a lot more than one insignificant on-line column tucked away deep in a poorly laid-out site to make one whit of difference.

Just relax and keep crushin'...

Mr. Anonymous from Allentown (Penn.) RULES! Here wrote Jay a list of his/hers "Ten Commandments" of online poker and here are a few tidbits:

(2) Thou shall not bluff.

(3) Do not slowplay!

(4) After the flop, do not play without top pair (or better), a flush draw, or a straight draw to the nuts.

(5) Getting raised on the turn/river demonstrates a huge hand. Folding is often correct.

(6) Just because you raised before the flop doesn't mean you need to continue to raise after it.

(7) Do not check-raise for effect. No one gives the check-raise the respect it deserves.

(8) Do not call with just overcards.

May god continue to bless this fine individual for spreading via ESPN such jewels of advice to aspiring poker players.
