Need some input here. My parents got me this:

[ QUOTE ]
Vivo Vegas presents this Professional Poker set includes 500 top quality, real 39 mm casino size clay composite poker chips that weigh 11.5 grams each. The set is cased in a deluxe, heavy duty, aircraft aluminum case that is lined with plush, industrial strength foam. This set also includes 2 decks of Playing Cards, 5 red color 19mm size dice and one dealer chip.

[/ QUOTE ]

It runs 90-100'ish. If there's one thing my parents are cool about, it's gifts, sometimes they have to openly ask me what I'd like for birthday/christmas, etc. So if I return these for something else, they understand fully.

Now, college is coming next fall, and I don't plan on using these chips too much this spring. Me keeping this poker chip set depends fully on how much use I'm getting out of them in college.

Sooo, college student brown trouts, given your experience with chip sets during college, are they useful enough to keep or should I sell the set?

poker chips are very useful in college, because a lot of college kids play poker. a lot of kids might have their own chips though. you might as well be the guy who runs all the games, like i was.

yes, the answer to nolanfan's question is no, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't get those poker chips!

It really helps if you can always supply a game with the materials...

so imo yeah, it's better than socks and underwear.

Forgive me, I've been away for a day or two, I'm rusty.

Worth checking in tonight though, the new Internet Magazine is online! Nolanfan34 in print w00t w00t!

And to answer Clayton, I'd keep the chips for sure. Get some custom labels made for them, and like daryn said, there's probably a nice advantage to being the one in charge of the game at college...

In my first semester of experience, if you can find a game of college kids worth sitting at, they already have a chip set. The game at my frat house has a real nice felt table and chipset. I could bring my chips as an improvement to the plastic chips used in my dorm and play for quarters, but id rather play pp 15/30.

Poker chips are useful in life. Every man should have a set, regardless if he uses them or not.

1) you're getting ripped off, go to costco
2) use 'em to hold tournys in your dorm/apartment

Don't forget: The guy who hosts the game, and provides chips, cards, food and bev, GETS TO TAKE THE RAKE!

Take $2/hand, and you'll have all the money by the end of the evening.

Search the archives, or do a search for chip labels on eBay. There are some sellers on there who sell some reasonably priced labels, although I can't vouch for the quality of all of them.

What if I already have labels on mine?

They look like this:

Still possible?

Nevermind, I'm gonna answer my own question. Apparantly you can get a custom design in the center of that chip, I believe...

I used to work at a store that sold chips like this. For custom hot stamp center designs, we could special order them. The problem was, the company wouldn't do this on chips already purchased. You had to get the chips and the stamping at the same time.

In most states, New York for example, it is. But whatever, so is providing alcohol to minors, and I do that all the time. I for one, don't know anyone who'd be willing to sit in a raked game at my school.

If you take a rake from a home game, you are not only breaking the law, but you are also an ass hole.

To me this all depends...

I play at a home game where they take a rake. Not sure how much they collect altogether, but they supply everything. Food (and by food I mean a nice dinner assortment), beer, snacks, soda etc. Something like that I don't have a problem with.

--------------------

To answer the original question though, I'd take the set back and pocket the cash. You'll need it for beer and more beer and then some more beer.

Like someone already said, if you find a game in college, they'll already have chips. If not, go buy some cheap plastic chips. This is college... you're supposed to be using the cheap crap. Cheap food, cheap beer... cheap poker chips just fit in with the whole atmosphere.

ThaSaltCracka

thats different though, some people actually take a rake. I would rather pay for food and stuff before the game starts though.

For games of 8 players or lower, as long as you are willing to keep some chips for higher dominations, your 500 will be fine. For tournies of 15-20, you will want 1000-1250 chips. I haven't hosted for more than 20 before. Get the cheap chips (like yours), you will A) lose some, B) they fade, C) you won't care when some dumbass spills beer on them or what not.
