My understanding is, it's when so many are in the pot that only an idiot would try to bluff into that many opponents -- so you're "protected" against anyone bluffing.

Or if there's a known calling station in the pot, you're protected from anyone attempting to bluff the pot because the bluff will always get called down.

I though it was if someone bet at a pot and then there's a call. The pot is protected because although the bettor may be bluffing, the caller cannot be.

What... you've never heard of the bluff-call?

Found the following doing a google search:

A protected pot occurs in the following situation.

Player A is a good player. Player B is a good player. Player C stinks and will call w/ crap.

Player A bets.

Player B has to believe player A has a good hand because the pot is "protected" by the bad player C. This is because player C will call too often to make a bluff by player A reasonable. Hence, the pot is "protected" from bluffs by the bad player, player C. Thus, a "protected pot" is a pot "protected" from bluffs by a weak player.

Also, Player B must know that Player A is also a good player.

Say Player B raises preflop in MP, bad calling station (Player C) calls on the button, Player A calls in the BB.

Flop comes out with 2 spades. Player A checks, Player B bets, Player C calls, Player A calls.

Turn is a blank. Check, bet, call, call.

River is a spade and Player A bets out. Player B (knowing that Player A is a good player) has to know the Player A probably has the flush because Player C is going to call him anyway. Player B wouuld have to have a pretty good hand to call Player A's bet.

Of course, Player A could know that Player B thinks this and could bet with top pair knowing that Player B might lay down two-pair and Player C could call with anything.

Fun game, eh?
