6 weeks ago you could have gotten a friend's year old M3 with 5K miles on it. Sold now, though.

Negatory captain. S-Class is far less unless it is the S600.

It is far less but then the ferrai oil change is like 4K on the 360 so far less is still insane. Not mention the newest s classes have major reliabilty issues according to most sources.

Go to edmunds and consumer reports (unfortunitaly you have to pay. Here is a cnnfn summary http://money.cnn.com/2004/11/08/pf/autos/cr_auto_reliability/ ). Here is JD powers initial quality ( http://research.cars.com/go/crp/safety.jsp?makeid=31&modelid=289&year=2004&myid=&a code=&crpPage=summary.jsp&gotopage=safety.jsp&aff= )
Notice the mechnical quality.

Mercedes used to be the gold standard of reliability in the 80s. That is no longer true. Mercedes defenders say the drive train is still great the problems are all in the electronics and besides isn't a little trouble worth it for the beautiful looks and stellar ride. The pissed off customers go my car is still in the shop no matter what the problem and that gets old in a hurry.

If you have any sources(not my mothers friends car has never had any problems) saying that post 2K SClass are above average in reliablity, I would love to hear them. Also don't confuse build quality with reliability. They are only losely related.

Eh, I don't have any sources, just experience. My dad is a dealer and has owned tons of these, never had any problems. BTW, the ride is the best I've ever experienced, rivaled only by the Lexus LS430, except I like handling better on the Benz.

hmmm, i'd probably buy a 25-30k car (2 year old G35 coupe, etc.) and invest the rest - i'd never spend that much on a car, unless of course my weiner suddenly shrank and i needed to compensate

I'd go sfer's route and get a slightly used m3. For a little bit more than 45k you can get a new one that doesn't have many options installed.
