JK Rowling makes here big announcements on her personal website, www.jkrowling.com. (http://www.jkrowling.com.) You have to go through puzzles and riddles to get to her big announcements. Today, she finally announced the completion of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth book in the series. An announcement of the release date is expected within 24 hours from her publishers. Here's the exaxt message from her website.

20th December 2004

I know you all expected this to happen on Christmas Day, but I was sure that those of you who celebrate Christmas have better things to do on the day itself than fight your way into my study, whereas those of you who DON'T celebrate Christmas would definitely prefer not to wait until the twenty-fifth- so...

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is COMPLETED and has been delivered to my English language publishers, who hope to announce the publication date within 24 hours.

Although I have joked about HP&THBP racing my third baby into the world, I have in fact had all the time I needed to tinker with the manuscript to my satisfaction and I am happy as I have ever been with the end result. I only hope you feel that it was worth the wait when you finally read it!

Wishing everybody a wonderful holiday and happy and peaceful 2005,

With love from,

J. K. Rowling

I have no robes. But, a couple summers ago I went down to Barnes & Noble to buy Order of the Phoenix during the "Midnight Madness" party on the day of the release. I got a free pair of Harry Potter glasses (frames, no lenses) for showing up. I keep them on my bookshelf and am wearing them as I type this post.

Dynasty, I think you have a problem.

What's worse is that I own 2 Harry Potter DVD's and I don't even have any kids. I don't understand the whole Harry Potter thing. In the Chamber of Secrets of secrets the wizard sent the hat to save Potter. At first I thought the hat was an ingenious gift because it would allow Potter to navigate. The hat could tell Potter where to run and Potter wouldn't have to look the snake in the eyes (which would kill him). Instead, a sword magically appears in the hat and ......

Then there is the whole Dobby thing. The elf is a slave and is used and abused but as soon as it accidently gets a sock it starts kicking it's once abusive and very powerfull masters [explicative]. If the elf was so powerfull, why did it take all the abuse? WTF?

There is a huge lack of consistency in the Potter movies. It seems like whenever the story gets stuck something magical (and something we've never seen before) hops in at the last minute and saves the day. Yet for some reason I still have to watch them.... They are like crack. /images/graemlins/mad.gif

[/ QUOTE ]
You need to read the books instead of watching the DVDs, first off.

Dobby is a house elf. The thing about house elves is that, although they are magical, they are bound to obey their owner. If they disobey, they physically punish themselves and feel horrible. The only way for them to leave is if their owner gives them a piece of clothing... hence the sock freeing Dobby.

The books are meant to be magical. If Rowling brings you to periodical dead ends, you have no idea what's going to happen next. Everybody knows that something magical will help Harry and his cronies out, but she uses circular techniques that bring everything to a close. Usually it's a piece of magic Harry learned earlier in the year and thought he'd never use that saves him.

Highly recommend reading the books for high EV (entertainment value). Very quick reads... and you don't even need to wait long for the next book to come out like the rest of us did! /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I have not read the books yet, but I definitely like the way the movies are going. The third one was far and away better than the first two, which weren't bad, but also not great.

I started reading the Harry Potter Series after the first two books were out. I was looking for soemthing to read to my son at bedtime and someone suggested these. I bought the first two in paperback and read them to myself. I then read them to my son. I then bought them on tape so we could listen to them on a long carride.

I have now read every book to myself, read the first four to my son and listened to all of them on tape, and repeatedly watched the first three movies. Without equivication listening to the books on tape has been the most enjoyable medium. The guy who reads the books on tape is absolutely amazing.

Oh you [censored]. I was at the b & n on 156th in crossroads. I got a ticket at like 11 and went back at midnight (i didn't know i could get one earlier in the day, and i'd preordered it months in advance). I waited in like until about 12:45-1:00 before picking it up. I felt sorry for the parents who were picking them up for their kids. How long can you really let your kid read if you don't get the book until 1?

I guess i'll try borders this year.

How popular is Harry Potter?

Here's some anecdotal evidence. Within hours of the publication date (7/16/05) being announced, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince vaulted to the #1 bestseller on Amazon.com. The book isn't even going to be available for 7 months.

#1 Bestseller on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/books/all/ref=b_tn_bh_be/002-6888995-3032034)

Here's some updated information. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be 672 pages long. That makes it the third longest in the series. By comparision:

Order of the Phoenix was 870 pages long.
Goblet of Fire was 734 pages long.
Prisoner of Azkaban was 435 pages long.
Chamber of Secrets was 341 pages long.
Sorcerer's Stone was 309 pages long.

171 days, 17 hours, 27 minutes until the publication date. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

In addition to the advanced page numbering system that Spammuel describes, the UK version will run a few pages longer due to the extra letters used in the correct spelling of words such as 'colour' and 'cheque'.

Well I suppose a sex tape could "leak" out in a few years Paris Hilton style, but I seriously doubt she will be on skinimax in the future.

I think thats something more suited to child actors from television, its a shame the Olsen twins somehow became billionaires because I was rooting for them to take this route. Fortunately, I think there is a reasonable chance of a "leak" in the next couple years based on how they've been acting overt he past year or so.

The books are vastly superior to the films. I only watched the movies out of curiosity. I won't buy the DVDs and I'm not really looking forward to the film version of Goblet of Fire this November.

But, I'm nuts about the books. I'm looking forward to the novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince even more than the film Revenge of the Sith (and I'm nutty Star Wars fan too).

There are no special adult versions of the books. However, the British publishers have "adult" covers.

In my lifetime, I think only the Star Wars films top the Harry Potter books for the mania which surrounds them.

That may not be true in England and other non-U.S. countries, though. Harry Potter could top Star Wars elswhere, especially in England.

How would you rank the books? I read them earlier this semester and I'd rank them

1(Phil Stone), 3(Azkaban), 2(Chamber), 4(Goblet), 5(Phoenix).

1*. Prisoner of Azkaban
2*. Goblet of Fire
3. Order of the Phoenix
4. Sorcerer's Stone
5. Chanber of Secrets.

* I considered Prizoner of Azkaban best when I first read each book. On rereads (4-5 times now), I prefer Goblet of Fire. I think this is because Goblet's plot is overly complex. On rereads, it's easy to follow each little detail (example: Harry witnessing Voldemort communicating with his Hogwarts ally via eagle owl, page 539-540)

After the extraordinary success of the first two books, Rowling was able to (and forced to) write for a more adult audience. I think that's why I like books 3-5 better. Rowling new she had an aging audience and gave more depth to the later books.

She is also clearly maturing as a writer, i thought the first two were quite a bit weaker than the latter three because of her inexperience as a writer.

Bill Murphy

4 then (distantly)3. 1 & 2 were the work of promising, but still immature writer. 5 had its moments but was just a mess overall, kinda like the Stones' Satanic Majesties Request. Hopefully the similarity will hold and 6 & 7 will be like Beggars Banquet & Let It Bleed. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif 5 has improved a bit w/re-reads. 4 could almost stand alone from the series, a la Wizard & Glass from Dark Tower.

The movies are irrelevant fuzz, although I like the three main kids and I thought Cuaron brought Prisoner 'out in the light' and away from the kiddie pap well.

But he should be kidnapped, raped, and strangled, then never allowed to make a movie again for being the one to suggest 4 be eviscerated down to one movie. LOTR would've worked better as two movies than GOF will as one.

Incidentally, I happened to see a shot of Fleur from the film. She looks about 12. In the book she's an 18 y.o French succubus hottie. *sigh* /images/graemlins/confused.gif Guess Ludivine didn't want to do it. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

I like them in the exact opposite order they were released...one of the reasons I'm looking forward to HBP so much I guess, because it will probably be my new favorite.

I think HBP is going to be very dark (they are in the middle of a war afterall), there will be more deaths and more twists to the story line. We might start to see some of the questions answered (i.e. why didn't Voldemort die?) but I don't think she'll reveal too many secrets until the seventh and final book.

I believe this book will see the antagonism between Potter and Snape come to a head. At least I hope so. It is one of the more interesting dynamics in the book, but it already reached a low boil in volume five. If there is not some sort of resolution in this volume, then there is a real danger this dynamic becomes tired before it is fully realized.

Incidentally, I hate the idea of ranking them, but if I had to I would say 3,4,1,5,2. I could easily rank them 4,3,1,5,2 also. "Goblet of Fire" and "Prisoner of Azkaban" are both very good, with solid character development and well paced plots.

IIRC, I heard someone dies in this one. And also that the HBP is not related to Harry.

Anything else Dynasty.

I will be 31 on August 2nd and I still like these books
