I didn't see too many films this year, 'cause there just weren't many I found myself interested in. But the two best I saw were City of God and Eternal Sunshine, in that order, though City of God wasn't made this last year.

Sure I will. If you have to hear something over and over it gets annoying. Things get played out, especially when you go to a costume party and their are 5 groups of Napolean/Pedro costumes and you hear "Sweet" or "Vote for Pedro" over and over throughout the night.

If that is hipsterism or elitism, then so be it.

GuyOnTilt
12-20-2004, 01:47 AM
Both Kaufman and Carrey's best work, IMO.

None of Carrey's other stuff pops out at me as better than this, though I might be forgetting something. I absolutely loved what Kaufman did with Adaptation though. That gets my vote for best Kaufman screeenplay, though I understand others going with Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine. It's exciting to hear that he's working with Spike Jonze again though for an upcoming film.

Anchorman was awful, both as a movie and as pure comedy. Random humor ("Where'd you get your suit, the toilet store?") is extremely lame. Best movie of 2004 was Kill Bill Vol. 2.

Yeah, I definitely don't doubt women are responsible for quite a few of those. My point was that the general American public is a pretty crappy judge of how good a film is. Titanic broke records for gross. Spiderman broke records for gross. Spiderman 2 broke records for gross. None of those were good films. Spiderman in particular had probably the biggest "how much did this movie gross" to "how well written was this movie's dialogue" ratio EVER.

Collateral was enjoyable; so was Dawn of the Dead. Nothing else great that I remember. Blade 3 was the worst I saw (and I say that as a big fan of the first Blade film).

City of God is almost certainly going to be looked back on as a truly great film...like a Casablanca or Third Man. That said, it wasn't made this year.

Out of what was made this year:

1. Garden State
2. Before Sunset
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
4. Sideways
5. The Incredibles
6. Collateral
7. Closer
8. Hero

Everyone I know says Sideways is amazing and I'm sure I'll like it but I have not seen it yet. I liked Garden State but it had some weak/cheesy parts and not quite good enough to be best film of the year.

Eternal Sunshine
Sideways.

That's all that deserves mentioning (as good movies this year).
Haven't seen The Life Aquatic, The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Million Dollar Baby yet.

Closer was OK. It was just a bunch of idiots determined to make themselves miserable. I don't think Natalie Portman is a good actress or physically attractive. I'm not into 12 yr old girls (which is what she looks like).

Garden State was OK. It got melodramatic at the end with some cliche/corny dialogue.

I Heart Huckabees was my favorite, but it certainly wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. I also liked very much Eternal Sunshine and Before Sunset (hey there's a pattern in there somewhere). Closer was very very interesting, although I'm not sure that I "liked" it (as anyone who's seen it will perhaps know what I mean). Wow what a down year for movies...

Eternal Sunshine has to be on the list.

I saw Finding Neverland over the weekend. I really liked it, Johnny Depp is awesome as usual. The thing I really liked is that the movie was different. I won't go into details here for those that haven't seen it, but if you tire of seeing the same movie every time you watch a movie, its worth a look. Perhaps not a top movie in other years, but this year so far it rates.

Sideways was alright - but I can't say I loved it like every one else seems to. I usually like artsy movies, but to me nothing really happened in this movie.

I can't think of another movie I really loved this year. There had to be another one, right??? I didn't like Closer at all, Kill Bill really didn't do it for me. Taking Lives was the worst movie I have ever seen. The worst movie list would get more nominations.

Oh yeah, I took my friend's foster kid to see Princess Diaries 2, I thought it was quite a good movie. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Thunderbirds was terrible though. /images/graemlins/frown.gif
