In an effort to improve my play of AK, I've decided to post all of my AK hands from the 4 sng's I'm playing right now. I'll post them individually as responses to this post. I welcome all comments, and realize that many of the hands will be pretty "standard".

My preflop raise probably wasn't big enough as it didn't do much to limit the field. Any suggestions of what to do after a min raise preflop. I don't like just calling, but I don't like commiting a lot of chips either. The flop seemed like a pretty easy fold.

I like your AK play here. Although it seems like betting less might encourage people to call and so you win more chips, I find that it hurts more in the long as you loose a big pot to a suck out.

Btw, are you the same Zephyr of saskatoon from RFD? If so, small world! /images/graemlins/cool.gif

When I'm called on the flop I'm worried and ready to shut it down to much more action. When it's my turn to act on the river I just can't see having a bet called by a worse hand. Thoughts?

I also can't see a check by a hand that beats you. Obviously the missed flush draw will not call you, but perhaps the K or J was one of the spades he held in his hand. I also don't really like the flop bet.

In Hand 4, I think 200 is a better bet since it leaves you a little more wiggle room to something like a raise/call behind.

Bet the river in Hand 6. Since he checked the river, unless he had the draw he probably called the flop with a pair of some type that you're now beating. He could even have QJ and have whiffed on the turn checkraise but must now call a smallish river bet. A 7 bets here. You're ahead and might get an extra 100-200 out of him.

Just a note. I posted each hand individually so that comments can go as responses to the individual hand. It may keep things a touch more organinzed.

I think you're right about hand 6. A Q will possibly call a smallish bet. I just don't want to give him a chance to outplay me as I'm folding if he raises me. Nevertheless, I think a bets probably correct.

You seem to be betting more when you pair the flop than when you don't. An observant opponent will pick up on this and steal the pot from you.

captZEEbo1
12-20-2004, 02:45 AM
nobody is that observant at party. I mean everytime he bet those flops and people folded, none of the opponents knew if he held AK or AA

captZEEbo1

I never know what to do in these situations. I find it's often a pocket pair or an AQ. I guess in this situation you have a TON of chips and can handle a coinflip loss fairly easily.

Crosby
12-20-2004, 03:47 AM
You mention that you don't like it, but I would suggest just calling the 30 preflop. If you are going to raise, I believe you need to raise enough to give yourself some chance of taking down the pot, say around 200. IMO, you don't have enough chips to just raise the AK for value and then fold if you miss. You're going to want to take some shots sometimes when you miss because the pot will be around half your stack, and I don't think you want to be taking these risks at the 10/15 level with your stack. So I'm for a cheap flop or a big raise, interested in other opinions.

Crosby
12-20-2004, 03:56 AM
Ive played 50s, 100s, and occasionally 200s and I would normally make this call. The way I see it, you are still in a solid position if you lose, and you can really run over the table at the 50-100 level if you win. I don't think you have any reason to assume you are likely to be worse than a slight underdog.

Crosby
12-20-2004, 04:02 AM
I think the flop bet is stretching it. With two backdoor draws and two overcards, you'd really like to see the turn, but you have to fold to a raise. I like raising less preflop, and oftentimes taking a free turn card at this point in the tourney in this spot.

Crosby
12-20-2004, 04:10 AM
Just wanted to point out that with the Ah redraw, I think you could check this or bet around half the pot depending on the players involved. You're not terribly likely to lose this pot if you're ahead. Preflop I'll often call here, but it seems like you get a lot of coldcalls in your game so you're probably doing the right thing.

Crosby
12-20-2004, 04:13 AM
Looks fine, though I think I'd usually bet a little more on the flop because I wouldn't want him to think this is a good opportunity to reraise allin and pick up the pot.

Sluss
12-20-2004, 09:43 AM
I constantly do this at 30s and 50s. I'm starting to question though if it is the correct play. Sometimes when I'm sure it's a coinflip I will call or put someone all in. I love it when I win and pick up a monster stack, but hate it when I lose a chunk of my hard earned chips.

Maybe, I'm just clouding my thinking because I've lost 22 of my last 35 coinflips this past week. /images/graemlins/frown.gif
