View Full Version : home game next thursday...need some ideas

I am in a home game next thursday 1-5 dealer calls 200 buy in, rebuys allowed, table stakes. The games is a lot of 7 stud hi/low 64 best hand no str8s or flushes qualify for low. 2/22, 7/27, 3/33. I play a lot of casino and on-line holdem, so I tend to want to play holdem when it gets to me. However, it seems like without playing a consistent number of holdem hands (2 hours staight, 2 rounds in a row, etc.), it is truly random and any two cards. So I find myself getting to play holdem one out of 7 hands and quicly folding 72 off and getting back to another card counting 3/33 game. In a situation like this, it is better to throw the hand ranking out the window and see the flop. It is $1 ante - no blinds, so the only time I throw it away is with a raise, but it seems to be such a different game. I was thinking of living it up with pineapple - but do they throw the 3rd card away before or after the flop. I was thinking that I could get some good action if I had them throw it away after the flop and could outplay most of them from that point - since I play a ton more holdem than any of them and get used to seeing coordinated boards, etc. Don't mean to ramble, just wandered if anyone else was in a similar situation. When we play Holdem, I get a few guys at the table who say "I like that game, I want to play the game that he played... usually their first experience with the game (7 play but we rotate in and out about 13-14 players). If I could convince them to play for a few hours straight, I am convinced I could take home everyone's buy in, but would probably have a tough time getting invited back to the game...or maybe lose everything because of runner, runner suckouts, who knows...

Thanks for the feedback

Kevin

pineapple: we've always played that you throw away after the flop.

Also, something we do (might not be possible when you play games like 2/22, etc) but we have the dealer call a game and it's dealt by each person. ie, 7 guys around the table, every game that gets called is dealt 7 times and then its the next guy's game. makes holdem much more tolerable because you can see 7 hands at a time, basically.

7 stud hi/low, no straights and flushes. game is actually a lot more fun when straights and flushes can be used for both. declare, 8 or better, or cards speak. A2345 wheel is nothing but the smallest straight? ouch

Yeah, it is a bummer on the high low game. They don't even allow you to declare both ways - so your 64 low and trip aces have to win on the way that you declare (nut low - walk away from the high). I bet that we play 2/22,7/27, or 3/33 4 or the 7 times around the table. I tend to go low or need to be at least one card away from the high hand (i prefer to be on the point...lol) so I tend to fold and watch a lot of these games versus spending $50 to chase only to go over on the last card. In the end, I play about 1.5 hours of a six hour session and always feel like we quit too early. Oh well, thanks for the feedback. I am looking forward to the game nonetheless.

The hot game right now in my home game is Omah/8 double flop. We play $1-3 bet.

Players are dealt cards then fold or pay $3 to see both flops.

Betting then takes place. As turn and river cards are dealt alternately to each flop there are more betting rounds. With the fee to see the flops plus five rounds of bets it makes some huge pots!

We don't declare. Best hand made from either line wins.

as for your holdem questions, it just doesn't seem to get the attention in home games.

i've found most "recreational" players like playing crazy games and games with wild cards. for some reason, they think its fun to beat 4 of a kind with a str8 flush, even though its done using 3 wild cards.

also, the match the pot games are popular because of the get rich quick mentality.

i used to play in a game with 2/22, etc, but the rules would get in the way. there are just so many variations and trying to explain them all to a newcomer is a pain.

always been my philosophy that if "normal" poker is boring, just raise the stakes and see if its still boring.

this thought is not shared by most home players.

good luck and keep calling holdem. not only are you better, but you will be on the button every time!
