View Full Version : Are we sure chipco's aren't injection molded?

I've always heard that chipcos were compression molded like a clay chip. Now that I have some samples of them (crystal oyster, apache and rounders) I can see a very slight injection (?) mark on the edge... just like the nevada jacks samples I have.

So what's the deal with these chips? I do like the chipcos better than the clays for use but hell... are they charging $1/chip for injection molded plastic that's just more consistent than the $0.08 chips I have now?

Someone else may be able to explain better how ceramics are baked/made, but i can answer the injection mark. It's because the rolling edge is applied in a separate process. You won't find those little pips on the face of the chip where the ceramic is exposed.

I can tell you they are definately not cheapo chips like those. Actual, real casinos use Chipco chips. REAL casinos. I know that every 11.5g "dice" chip advertisement out there says that they are selling "chips just like casinos use" but casinos really DO use Chipcos.

The BetG ceramics have no such injection marks on the edge. I guess they use a different process.

What are BetG's, who makes them? I thought there was only two ceramic poker chip makers.

I got a sample set of the crystal oyster chips a few months back and I put one of the chips through some severe abuse to see just how durable they were.I threw it down onto a concrete patio and repeatedly struck it with a small stone, this resulted in the chip eventually breaking into about 5 pieces.
I can assure you these chips are not injection molded plastic and are some sort of ceramic,I've seen the proof.

Right on, Ten... I couldn't figure out why there would be an injection pip on a $1 chip. If the rolling edge is put on separately that would definitely make sense. I'm torn between clay chips and chipcos now. I like the way you can stack chipcos to the sky but real clay chips just look so damn cool after you use them a couple years. I love the patina they take on from the hand oils.

if you don't have ASM (pokerchips.com) samples yet, I highly recommend them. From what I've seen, I think they are superb quality for the price.

They are a large European manufacturer called Bourgogne et Grasset.

Most if not all of The Palms new limited editions are made by BetG. They are slightly larger at approx. 40mm.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I have to differ with you. While my personla Chipcos were being designed, (by Chipco themselves), the design team manager told me that the same designer that was working on my chips designs the Palms chips. She even said that he was finishing the limited edition Palms Playboy chips just before he did my Egyptians. And I have seen many Palms chips on the web that list as "Chipco" and have yet to see another chip maker reference.

edit: I also could not find anything about ceramics on BetG's site. Just acrylic jetons and injection molded chips. Decal value chips, Coin inlay chips, Surface printed chips, Hot stamped chips...

I think these chips (http://www.silver-state-treasures.com/lasvegs/palms04.htm) are the BetGs from the Palms, and they do look like ceramic chips.Very similar to chipco by the look of it.

Only looks like one attempt to do traditional 'edge spots' that line up with the top... I mean: they don't but the rest of the designs seem more like the 'joker' or other chips that don't try to make the corner.

Doesn't make me like SUITS any less though. That's a sharp way to bend the corner.

Sorry - OT on 'injection' marks...

The surface printed chips are most likely the ceramics you were looking for. As for Palms using Chipcos, the casino have used both Chipcos and BetG chips.

DerryABU was corrected in pointing those chips out being BetG. The new Limited Palms chips are also slightly larger than the Chipcos.

Wow, I agree, they sure like like ceramic. If it didn't say "B et G" right next to them I'd lay money on them being Chipcos. The rolling edges (what you can see) look just like Chipco's. I wonder why they don't mention them on the BetG or GPI site or in their catalogues?

If you look at the BetG chips, they all have their mint mark BG on them. Chipcos ones do not. The BetG chips' rolling edge doesn't seem to have a seem to them. At least not to my eyes.
