I agree, very underrated album.

No Meshuggah fans here? Chaosphere would easily make my top ten. Fear Factory - Demanufacture would in there as well.

This man knows metal. It's gigantic, convulsive terror in the form of music.

That said, I'd rather listen to Pantera's Great Southern Trendkill or Metallica's Ride The Lightning or Tool's Lateralus than Old Man's Son or Cannibal Corpse or Mayhem.

But that's just me. I'm an aristocrat.

But damn, that sh*t is hardcore. Kinda goofy, in its own way, but damned hardcore.

If I still listened to metal (I don't really), I would make sure my list included Sabbath's "Paranoid" and at least one album by The Crown. That band is brutal.

Also, Reign in Blood and South of Heaven are definitely, definitely on the list.

And where's the Maiden? Come on.

So many semantics, so little time.

Kinda depends on what you categorize metal is, I guess.

Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman
Bruce Dickinson - Accident of Birth
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Dio - Holy Diver
Iron Maiden - Live After Death
Megadeth - Rust in Peace

1. Appetite for Destruction - Guns and Roses
2. Highway to Hell - AC/DC
3. Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath (Flame away but, at a time when metal was in a lull in the late 70's, this is one of the albums that kicked it back into high gear)
4. Blizzard of OZ- Ozzy Osbourne (with the late great Randy Rhodes)
5. Montrose - by Montrose with a 17 year old Sammy Hagar on Lead vocals.
6. Ace of Spades - Motorhead. The best gambling heavy metal song ever. "We want to be the type of band that if we move in next door to you, your grass dies." Lemmy.
7. Any of Led Zeppelins first three albums.
8. British Steel - Judas Priest
9. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
10. The Black Album - Metallica

How do you have mostly all 70's albums and some 80's but then put Metalica Black on the same list? All of your choices are great albums. Great. But Metallica Black does not belong on a list with the words, "Old School" in it.

That was a great album too. I remember reading an interview with Dave Mustaine that said this was during the days when they were heavily into drugs, and the band took their advance from the record company that was supposed to go towards the production of So Far,So Good, So What, and blew it all on drugs. Then they had to scrape together what little money they had and record the album with just a few thousand dollars.

Has nobody mentioned Theater of Pain? That's a bloddy crime.

One of my personal main stream favorites that should not be on the list though, is...

Warrant: Dirty, rotten, filthy, stinking rich.

Bunch of good songs on there.

They are a different breed altogether..seen them over 30 times, and every tour since the early 80's. I have seen sabbath, Ozzy, Motley crew, Billy Joel, Peter Gabrial, and many other bands from many different kinds of music backgrounds....but no one, and I mean no one, can top a live Rush show /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Its more than that... this is LITTERALLY the band that inspired Spinal Tap. But there is one cool thing about them, their origional guitarist - Ross the Boss, was the bass play for the Dictators. One of the first ever punk bands.

Oh, did I mention the lead singer (in the thong) is operatically trained. Thats right folks.... it doesn't get funnier than this.

Well it was a joke, that either no one got, or no one thought was funny. Probably the latter.

CoaK won the first ever grammy award (1989) in the heavy metal category much to the surprise the heavily favored Metallica and Jethro Tull themselves. In fact, no one from JT was even at the ceremony because they thought it was ridiculous to be even nominated let alone win.

Man, I've got to say, I never imagined I would ever see a thread mentioning Manowar on 2+2.

Yea, they are very over the top and cheesy (almost all their songs are about knights, dragons, and being "true" metal), listening to them still brings a smile to my face. They keep getting record deals cause they have quite a following over in Europe. I'd like to see them live but they don't tour the states much at all, mostly overseas.

"Defender" is a great song that has a voiceover by Orson Welles.
